How to know what app is preventing HDDs to idle

Just found this online: https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/research.google.com/en//archive/disk_failures.pdf "Power Cycles. The power cycles indicator counts the number of times a drive is powered up and down. In a server-class deployment, in which...

How to know what app is preventing HDDs to idle

I don't have shares mounted. Also tried uninstalling mostly everything, including all non essential Synology's own apps. To no avail. Interesting. Didn't know that. I thought idling would extend the lifetime.

    DS-923+ Fan Noise

Sure, I thought noise could be an issue because of that, but then I watched a NAS focused youtuber reviewing this unit and saying it was totally quiet. For certain he doesn't run the NAS on his desk. Yes and Yes. QNAP's hardware is better for sure. Now that I have both on my desk, the QNAP...

    DS-923+ Fan Noise

So... I replaced the fans with top notch Noctua 's NF-A9 FLX "premium fans". Expensive stuff for fans. Didn't get anywhere. Noise levels seem about the same as stock fans. Sure I could use the RPM reducing cables that are provided with the Noctuas (which lower RPM from 1600 to either 1250 or...

    DS-923+ Fan Noise

Yes, that was the first thing, originally. Set to quiet from the beggining. It just so happens that quiet is not quiet enough when the NAS is in you work desk. Not the case with my QNAP 453, which runs dead silent.

How to know what app is preventing HDDs to idle

I have my Synology configured to idle the HDDs after x minutes of innactivity, but this never happens. Anytime I check they are spinning, and they get reasonably warm, which is a loss of lifespan and electricity, plus unnecessary noise. So my question is whether there is a way to verify what...

    DS-923+ Fan Noise

That would be the fallback solution, just moving there somewhere else. But they would still be in my home office and the noise will not go away just by doing that. What I was really looking for is an indication for a really quiet third party fan model that I could manually replace. Or some...

Plex doesn't see folders on Synology

Solved. DSM requires that Plex be granted R/W access to the folder.

Plex doesn't see folders on Synology

I have Plex Server running perfectly on both my QNAP and Windows desktop, but now that I'm trying to run in on my new Synology DS-923+, I've stumbled into this situation: When I try to add a folder to the media library, Plex only finds the root shared folder, but cannot see any of the folders...

    DS-923+ Fan Noise

I recently bough this NAS after seeing reviews it is dead silent, but would have to disagree. I run the NAS over my desk, just by the monitor. I already configured the fans to run in quiet mode, but they are still noisy. I'm sure there's no defect, it's just that they are not as silent as I...

Getting Aquantia AQtion 5Gbps external USB Ethernet card to work on QNAP

Hi. To close this topic, I have quit trying to make this work, and just sucked it up and ordered the proprietary QNAP dongle. For what is worth, I post below a link to the closest solution I found, which provided steps to make the QNAP dongle work on a Synology NAS. It is similar to what I was...

Getting Aquantia AQtion 5Gbps external USB Ethernet card to work on QNAP

Wow I'm drooling. But I would have to upgrade my motherboard to be able to use one of these. I'm still stuck on PCIe 3.0 and only one NVME port. Maybe I'll have to upgrade this motherboard after all. Has served me well since 2017, upgrading from a Ryzen 7 1800X all the way to Ryzen 7 5800X. I...

Getting Aquantia AQtion 5Gbps external USB Ethernet card to work on QNAP

Just did a quick search. No stores I know to be reputable came out. Would you recommend any store?

Getting Aquantia AQtion 5Gbps external USB Ethernet card to work on QNAP

Understood. It seems that load balancing will be a cumbersome and incomplete solution for my home LAN. I will need to stick to straightforward 10GbE and 5GbE. And it seems there isn't a single record on the internet of someone getting the Sabrent 5GbE dongle to work on QNAP, and I don't have...

Getting Aquantia AQtion 5Gbps external USB Ethernet card to work on QNAP

Where can we buy these sort of SSDs? I once looked on Amazon and could not find it. That's an interesting price point.
