Anyone tried the ExpertWifi routers yet? EBR63, EBM68

I've been out of the Asus network space for some years. I assumed the "ExpertWifi" branding and "for SMBs" included a greater focus on stability and quality. But maybe not?

Anyone tried the ExpertWifi routers yet? EBR63, EBM68

I'm looking into buying a pair of EBM68, but there aren't much info as in objective feedback and experience on how well these devices work yet. Here's what I've found so far: Devices in the ExpertWifi series...

    XT8 and VLAN

There is VLAN support in some Asus routers actually. Just found this out myself. https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1049415/ Synology routers have it too: https://kb.synology.com/en-ca/SRM/tutorial/Synology_VLAN_Deployment_QSG Would be great if cheaper Asus routers got it too.

No firmware updates available for the ZenWifi ET8?

https://www.androidpolice.com/asus-zenwifi-et8-review/ I remember passing on XT8 because they were buggy. Too bad Asus still don't nail stability before putting some of the most expensive mesh routers out there to market.

Release Asus ZenWiFi XT8 - New Firmware: 3.0.0.4.386_45898

It's probably related to spanning tree protocol (STP). https://en.community.sonos.com/troubleshooting-228999/problems-with-certain-asus-routers-5893797 https://www.snbforums.com/threads/sonos-causing-router-problem-when-using-two-wires.28871/

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0 (continued)

Any word on DNSPooq from Asus? Found nothing on Asus security advisory (https://www.asus.com/Static_WebPage/ASUS-Product-Security-Advisory/) and no recent changelogs mentions anything about it.

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

I'm selling my XT8's. Since IT changes so rapidly, my view on IT products for home use is that if it's not stable, and the promised features still aren't there months after launch, it's time to sell the products and move on. It likely won't get as good as promised ever, and if it ever will, it...

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

Could we get DHCP and DNS settings per network/ SSID please? I'd like to be able to manually assign LAN IP addresses also for guest SSID, but also configure different DNS settings for IoT devices connected to a guest SSID working as IoT SSID.

    Release XT8 New Firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25790

No you can't. Has to be a LAN ip within primary network, the address range given in guest network is not allowed for DHCP reservation. (192.168.101.210 is the IP address the device in question already had.) Was a good idea though.

    Release XT8 New Firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25790

One can't set DNS that will be given to clients by DHCP, per guest ssid? I'd like my IoT stuff to use a different DNS than my regular devices.

    Release XT8 New Firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25790

Why would that impact performance? Already using that firmware. Why do you expect AiMesh will make a difference in terms of performance here? I could try, yes, but not while gf is at home office. :D

    Release XT8 New Firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25790

I now have two XT8, one set up as regular router with smart connect disabled, where 5ghz-2 is hidden WPA3 WiFi 6 only, for dedicated "backhaul" to my 2nd XT8 in media bridge mode. Media bridge is manually connected with 5ghz-2 to this "backhaul" SSID, no other clients on this band. I get around...

Asus ZENWIFI XT8 - AP Mode using switch

I'd rather bridge the ISP router, connect straight to WAN at master in AiMesh mode, put the switch behind it, and the AiMesh nodes wired either to the switch or the other LAN ports on the master. ISP router in bridge mode -> AiMesh master -> switch -> node 1 and 2

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

Impressive list of routers to get AiMesh 2.0. To stay competative I'd suggest following features: VLANs. Ubiquiti Unifi and Cisco Meraki Go have it. With ability to assign both ethernet ports (trunk or single) and ESSIDs/ WiFi (single). Wireguard VPN protocol. Dedicated IoT ESSID, disabled by...

    ASUS RT-N66U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.382.52272

I love how prejudice people are against Google/ Nest Wifi. "Scroogle" etc. Have you actually owned it? Don't you like automatic updates that actually work? Google is inside your network anyways. Don't pretend otherwise. And I've not experienced downtime due to Google backend going down, at least...

    ASUS RT-N66U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.382.52272

I only buy Nest WiFi routers for that reason. Also mesh with AC2200 sure is better than with AC1200 (points). The level of set and forget you get with Google/ Nest WiFi is well worth the requirement of using a Google account IMO. At least when placing out equipment at family and friends. What a...

    ASUS RT-N66U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.382.52272

Yes, it's a legendary device in regards to support. Luckily we have alternatives like John fork of ASUSWRT-Merlin, FreshTomato, DD-WRT and similar to keep it secure at least. But lots of good reasons to upgrade hardware now. Not only bandwidth, but also stuff like OFDMA, WPA3, mesh...

    ASUS RT-N66U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.382.52272

It's now listed in the Asus end-of-life list: https://www.asus.com/event/network/eol-product/ So we'll probably not have any new firmwares, not even security only fixes?

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Is support for Wireguard something you'll look into aswell?

    Release XT8 New Firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25790

Just got a used XT8. Factory reset it, flashed this firmware through admin GUI using ethernet cable, factory reset it, and using it as media bridge with my current Nest router until I get at least one device with AX to test what speeds I can get. So far so good. 1/1gb fiber, got 250/350mbps...
