    Have anyone tried Asus RT-AX88U?

Yup. Synology release notes. Added WPA3 Personal/Enterprise support about a month ago. https://www.synology.com/en-us/releaseNote/RT2600ac

    Newbie - just purchased DS418Play w/ 4 x 4TB WD RED - Questions

Do you currently have 4 drives installed? If not, you cannot do RAID 6. During SHR setup, if 4 like sized disks are installed, the NAS will ask if you want single or dual disk redundancy. Dual disk is Raid 6. SHR is basically Raid with a few added features. One is you can use different...

Synology Releases 6 Bay Intel-based NAS

I like Synology but they take such small baby steps with their hardware evolution. This box needs 2 x PCIe expansion slots so caching SSD's and 10GigE can be used simultaneously. Or make a single PCIe card supporting both. QNAP is killing them with hardware offerings.

QNAP Intros AMD-Powered TS-x73 NAS Series For SMBs

Same CPU as the TVS-x73 series which has been out for 1+ year. So, my suspicion is the TVS series will see a new CPU soon. I'm a bit concerned about this hardware platform. The TVS series has suffered from issues with failed RAID disks. Usually drive #3 on the 4 bay units. Its obviously a...

    2x2 AC Access Point Roundup

Tim, curious why a roundup released in December was testing an OpenMesh product with firmware that is 6 months old (and at least 5 versions old) and the Ubiquiti with firmware from February 2017 (at least 10 versions old, actually more but I stopped counting). Even the Ubiquiti controller used...

PLEX problem with the x31 based Qnap

The TS-231 is ARM based. The TS-251 is x86 based. Very likely, PLEX issues will be different between these models.

Netgear: Upgrade policies + updates for ReadyNAS

Obviously no one other than Netgear can tell you with certainty, but I would recommend you not expect the same type of OS upgrade path with Netgear like you typically see with QNAP and Synology. If you review my list from above, you will see that each series of NAS has seen several updates...

Netgear: Upgrade policies + updates for ReadyNAS

NETGEAR Guy Can you please pass along to the powers that be @ Netgear, the new support forum design is terrible. Its a huge step backwards in usability and only serves to make it more difficult for end users to find answers. The previous forum was one big plus for Readynas products. The help...

Netgear: Upgrade policies + updates for ReadyNAS

Tim OS6 is only supported on newer RNxxx models The original Infrant CPU units were supported up to 4.1.x Original x86 CPU units (NVX, Ultra, Pro models) were supported up to 4.2.x Short lived NV+ v2 and Duo v2 (first gen ARM designs) used OS5.x Current RN units (ARM and x86) are the only...

External drive for backing up NAS -- USB3 vs eSATA

eSata passes harddisk SMART data, USB does not. Ever try to perform data recovery on a usb harddisk? Its difficult and most cases you have to remove the disk from the container and connect using Sata to have a decent chance of recovering data. I wouldn't recommend many WDC USB external disks...

    HGST or WD Reds?

I was right there with you. Most of my cost sensitive networking gear now goes to Zyxel. However, the R7000 from netgear is solid as an access point. Very solid. Still prefer Ubiquiti for SMB use, but the R7000 or Asus RT series for SOHO or resi.

QNAP Virtualization Station Update - 6.3.15

How bulletproof is Virtualization Station? Would you run Win Server 2012R2 Essentials on it for a SOHO? 6 users.... I keep hearing...no way...and I should invest in PC hardware. Or at the very least I need to buy 2 x QNAP units and keep one as a hot spare. Thoughts...

TVS AMD based NAS and thoughts?

Anyone look at the new TS-563? AMD x86 based true NAS. Qnap removed the LCD, the HDMI port, real time encoding and the QVPC feature. Oh, they also used non locking drive trays which isn't a huge deal since the locking trays only kept out honest people anyway. It seems fast, close to TVS-463...

TVS AMD based NAS and thoughts?

Possibly and probably. However, the core logic chipsets that go along with them aren't so flawless.

Netgear R7000 New FW 1.0.4.28 Released

I've had excellent results over the last 1+ year with my R7000. That is up until I got a Samsung Galaxy S6. For some reason when this phone is connected to the R7000 my throughput speeds slowly diminish over the course of the day, forcing me to reboot the R7000 to recover the lost speed. And...

    ZyXEL Introduces Cheaper UTM Gateway

Tim Read your post about the USG40HE. I located the spec sheet and this answers some questions. http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/uploads/images/ds_USG40HE.pdf Seems the HE includes 1 year of content filtering and App Control but does NOT include the anti spam and antivirus licenses. Those are...

    QNAP TS-451 doesn't start. Lemon?

Doesn't look promising. What models disks? Are they on the compatibility list? Are you sure the power cords are all connecting properly?

Getting Parallels or Fusion VM into QVS

Thanks. Since I would use my readynas as the target (dest) I should be OK. What errors you are getting? Have you upgraded your readynas to latest firmware?

Getting Parallels or Fusion VM into QVS

I saw a thread about rsync issues with a readynas. I guess that was you... Interesting as I also have an older x86 readynas I'd like to use as a backup destination. I was torn between the Ts-453 with 8GB or the Ts-470 Pro with 16GB ram. Eaegis has the 470 pro with 16GB for $999. It's a...
