Merlin update firmware won't update rtac68u

Shockwave

New Around Here
I can not update my Merlin firmware. RT-AC68U

Current 347.42.2 firmware.
New 380.59

First I reset everything to defaults. Only PC connected.

Methods:
1.GUI reset: restore/save/upload settings
2. Holding down reset then turning it on until light blinks slow
3. Holding down wps until light blinks fast.
Both methods reset the router. Takes me to the set up page, doesn't ask for log in prompt.

Setting always reset and clear after using both methods.

I tried to upload the new firmware the way Merlin suggested. Using the Asus rescue tool. (Light blinking slow). Gets completely done and then says failed. Reboots itself. GUI loads up and still see old firmware.

Tried also the GUI method. Uploading the new fw. Says completed, reboots but still old firmware display.

Also tried using the IP address when in reset mode(slow blink). Asustek CFE miniWeb server. Upload new firmware, upload completed, system is going to reboot reboot message. System reboots, all lights come on after a few minutes.
I also restored default NVRAM values after the first attempt and still same result.

Can anyone please help

You need to update first to an intermediate version (can't remember exactly which) so the CFE can be upgrade, try 378.55/6 and then newer versions.

It seems it's 378.50 version. :-)

Yes and yes, also remove any USB devices connected to the router before doing the FW update.

378.50 worked. And now updated to 380.59.

Everything seems to be working. Using backup settings right now. I'll reset once the family is not streaming.

All this is ok correct?

All correct, less using backup / importing old configuration settings, you need to RESET and configure it manually from scratch after without any old FW configuration file import.

You are welcome.

You should not only do a full reset to factory defaults and afterwards a minimal and manual configuration to secure the router and connect to your ISP,

but, I would also 'sanitize' your network too. This will ensure that the greatly upgraded firmware is working as it should (glitch-free).

Before you moved to this firmware, I would have recommended you use john9527's NVRAM Save/Restore utility.

But after you have followed the two links above it, you can still use it to be ready for the next firmware jump (and hopefully, you won't leave it as long as you did here).
