I just installed Windows 10 on my PC today and found out I can no longer access my Asus RT-AC68U connected hard drive anymore. When I type in \\192.168.1.1 in the address bar, it could still list all the sub folders in my drive, and from there I am prompted for credential and it keeps telling me access is denied, even with my correct router user name and password, which always worked before upgrading to Win10. Login from my other PC is fine since it still runs Windows 8 which leads me to believe it's an router/win10 compatibility issue? What am I missing here?

What browser?

Did you try a complete network shutdown for a few minutes? Including the computer client you use to access the USB drive?

Pull the plug on the router, modem and shutdown the computer properly.

Wait for a couple of minutes and then plug in the modem, wait for 5 minutes, plug in the router, wait for 5 minutes and then finally, plug in the USB drive.

Now, turn on your computer and see if the issue persists.

At this point, you can / should also try different browsers too.

I wasn't using a brower but Windows File Exploer to access my NAS. I'll try your method and will report back. Also is there some setting I need to switch on in Windows 10 to access a router attached drive?

DIsable Windows Firewawll.
Or it can be a "Master Browser" issue - which takes time to resolve. If your Master Browser changed.

Tried disabling windows firewall, didn't work. Tried switch on and off the "force as master brower" in Merlin, didn't work either.

When you force the Master Browser option, you should shut down all the computers and then reboot the router (first) before you start them up again.

It sounds like a permission problem. Master browser problem would involve not being able to see hosts by name. OP can reach the share via UNC, so it's not a connectivity problem.

It's possible that the Windows machine is passing \localmachine\username which is screwing up the login process. Have you looked at the logs on the router and seen if it's even seeing the login attempt?

Possible SMB auth issue - some of the routers run a pretty old version of Samba that doesn't fallback properly with newer SMB clients.

Just did a quick check against my QNAP TS543+ (QTS4.1) and that worked fine...

might want to bounce this thread over to the ASUS subforums - if there is a problem with their SMB implementation, the resolution would be specific perhaps to ASUS...

This router's samba was working fine for me before upgrading to Windows 10 though.

Also just discovered that my Asus PCE-AC68 adaptor on this Windows 10 PC is only running at a meagre 27 Mbps bandwidth. It used to be between 500-1000 Mbps when used together with the AC68U router. So naturally I suspected this might be the cause of my denied NAS access and experimented switching back to the desktop's default N adaptor, with no success.

I have to say I am quite disappointed in how much network related trouble Windows 10 has caused me since the upgrade.

It's entirely possible that Windows 10 no longer supports some old mechanismin the SMB stack, which is why it won't work with the router.

For example, my QNAP NAS only supports SMB protocol version 1.0, even though Microsoft released version 3.0 in 2012 and OS X supports SMB version 2.0 as of 10.9.

QTS4.1 supports SMB2 and SMB3 - not immediately obvious to find in the GUI, but it's there...

gpedit.msc, Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options, and under Network Security:LAN Manager authentication level, select "Send LM & NTLM" - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated

In windows 10 and 8 the credential's manager is your friend for connecting to non-domain network resources. I have connections to both the USB drive on the router and my home server. You need to go to the full control panel/user accounts/credential manager and select windows credentials.

The username should leverage the "host\user account" this resolved all the SMB connectivity issues for me.

Try Windows 10 forum?

can't find gpedit.msc in RUN. Search for it in Cortana also yields nothing. Does Win10 have this?
