    Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.374.38 is out

    I switched from DDWRT BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2 r22118 (Broadcom K3x driver) to 38_2-em. I set the TX power level to 90mW The signal boosted from -70dBm (ddwrt) to -65dBm (merlin). Check the home plan for walls and distance. So far, so good. I just need to set the router to reboot itself...

    Thanks, thiggins, but I am not sure I understand your answer. 1. one fan as in the 92mm fan in the back of the unit or 2. one 92mm fan in the back of the unit and another fan on CPU ?

    Besides the exhaust fan, is there another fan inside Synology DS211 / DS211+ unit ? I'm looking for a NAS, and I'd rather buy one with passive cooling on internal components (CPU mainly).

    NAS recommendation

    Most PSUs have a surge protection system, protecting the PSU and the system from internal AND external overcharge. I think a NAS should implement something similar (they are quite expensive units).

    I use an UPS w/ surge protection, but in my case the damage was caused by a defective harddisk - I think the HDD power connectors were shorted (or similar). The defective HDD was "new".
