High Latency Issues on WiFi? GT-BE98 Pro

I'm seeing some issues related to wifi and I'm not sure what could be wrong. I'm currently on the latest stock firmware from Asus (3.0.0.6.102_37031) and basically things will look fine but latency will spike tremendously on wifi randomly and sometimes for more than just a second or two. I think the easiest way to explain the issue is to post my usage example where the latency issue really kills me.

I have 2 WiFi 7 clients, both are using the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 Wi-Fi 7 High Band Simultaneous (HBS) Network Adapter, both are on Windows 11 24H2 (albeit slightly different builds but whatever) and both are on v3.1.0.1323 of the qualcomm driver. Both are connected to the wifi 7 with MLO enabled network. (I have tried disabling MLO but that doesn't seem to make things better or worse) Both machines are on the same router of course, I think this goes without saying that they're on the same LAN but I just want to make it clear that this isn't going over the internet so the latency spikes are purely internal. One machine is running Sunshine for hosting game streaming, and the other is running Moonlight to connect via LAN to the Sunshine host. This is where the latency spikes become very apparent as the spikes cause network related frame drops to spike to 100% and the stream basically freezes entirely. The kicker is, if I move the host to Ethernet, despite the client still being connected to wifi, the issue seems to go away entirely. This isn't a viable solution though as I can't permanently keep any of my machines that close to the router for reasons that are irrelevant, and it doesn't change that the wifi shouldn't be so unstable. It just proves at least to me that the issue is with the wifi.

Has anyone been experiencing similar issues? Have you found a way to fix it? Is it an issue with the firmware? I would have hoped the firmware would be much more mature by now but maybe that's just what the issue is?

Yes I have noticed something similar but I do not have MLO enabled on my ASUS network. I thought it was noise from UPSes that I set up but I moved a BQ16 Pro very far away from a supposedly pure sine wave version then added a TrippLite ISOBLOK2-0 to the output with no improvement.

EDIT- To confirm what I'm seeing/experiencing simply run an OOKLA speed test and watch the tiny (latency) numbers at top...

Latency is there with or without MLO for me. Separating each band into its own network seems to be better but it's still not wholly ideal. I also don't see any reason why things should not be better with smartconnect and/or MLO.

Edit: Other than that the drivers are just still kinda crap ofc

Having the exact same issue on a RT-BE96U on all firmwares. Using the same Wi-Fi card you have as well. Also see the issue on Intel BE201 and BE202. If I use ethernet, issue completely goes away. I re-installed my old AC86U and the issue is non-existent.

Troubleshooting steps:
  1. Tried multiple firmware versions (OEM and ASUSWRT): 3.0.0.6.102_32882, 3.0.0.6.102_34488, 3.0.0.6.102_37024, 3.0.0.6.102_37031, 3.0.0.6.102_37038
  2. Exchanged router for new one at local retailer
  3. Separating wireless bands (2.4G, 5G, 6G)
  4. Creating a new MLO network
  5. Restoring to default settings and followed quick setup
  6. Connecting to ethernet (issue resolved)
  7. Replaced RT-BE96U with RT-AX86U, no latency observed with the latter.
  8. Verified no channels conflicting with neighboring networks.
  9. Ping test to router on 6G band (changed router to 192.168.1.X subnet):
  10. Disabling Both beamforming options, WMM APSD, MU-MIMO, and Airtime fairness.
 
None of you have said if you’ve tried the obvious fixes:

Reboot ISP-provided modem/gateway.

Replaced Ethernet cables between router and modem/gateway/ONT.

Made sure devices your speed testing on have latest OS versions and drivers.

That's kind of broad if Ethernet is working at full speeds, then your third point makes sense to address...
 
But if the Ethernet cable is damaged, it can still cause the latency issues. I had this same problem with my BE96U, and replacing the Ethernet cable between the 96U and my AT&T BGW320-505 fix the WiFi latency issues. I don’t know why it fix it, just that the issue disappeared and never came back.

This also worked with a neighbor’s eero router which was having the identical WiFi latency issue. Again, no idea why but again replacing the Ethernet cable fixed their problem.

Hence my suggestion to try replacing the Ethernet cable.

I have tried two modems, both my CM9200 and the ISP provided Arris modem. When I reboot my router, the modem gets unplugged along with the router for 10 seconds. I never reboot only my router. Ethernet cables have been replaced between router and modem twice (Cat 6A shielded). I have seen that issue before in other environments, but not sure how it would be cabling if it’s just the wireless aspect of the router.

My desktop is fully updated on BIOS, chipset, and wireless drivers as well as Windows 11 24H2 fully updated in windows update. Same thing for my laptops with Intel Ultra 7 and Ultra 9 chips. I use Intel DSA to update the wireless and Bluetooth drivers as soon as I get a notification. This issue is happening on 2.4G, 5G, and 6G bands completely agnostic of which hardware is connecting to the router.
 
I had similar issues, but for some reason I changed the first three ocelots of my mac address in WAN settings to the TP-link one of F0:09:0D and so many issues went away. I would try it. I wish it would allow us to change the MAC address of the wifi radio's, but i've tried everything and can't get it to work.
