ASUS RT-BE88U 10G Copper and Fiber ports

RC3H1

New Around Here
Hi all. Really interested in buying a BE88U for the number of 2.5G and 1G ports though I am needing to clarify two things.

1) On the BE88U, there are two 10G ports, one copper and one fiber. I am wanting the 10G copper port on the BE88U to connect to my 10G Google Fiber Box (GR6EXX0C) at 10G. This is a WAN port so this should work. I also want to utilise the 10G fiber port on the BE88U though this would connect downstream to a third-party switch that has 10G fiber also. Would this work given it may be a WAN port instead of LAN? I can tell with the documentation so far.

2) If the above works, does the BE88U support 802.1q tagging? Ideally I would like to do VLAN tagging to the 10G fiber port on the BE88U. My Third-party switch supports tagging.

According to this user what you describe on your first point should work, although the box of the device suggests otherwise.

Point two definite 'works'*.

*results might vary

Thanks

Thanks, I did order one. Will try it out when it arrives next month.

Please post some feedback once you've set it up. I'm curious what the deal is with the box saying its 10GB LAN/WAN *or* SFP.
That's just meaning the WAN connection can be via either the 10G WAN/LAN or the 10G SFP+ port, or the 2.5G WAN/LAN port. Doesn't mean they share. Whichever is not used for WAN is available for LAN.

Ah I see, I interpreted that different. Can someone confirm that the 10G SFP+ internally is referred to as eth9?

This should pose no problem, to clarify, it is not a fiber port but an SFP+ port so you can choose to connect based on fiber (SFP+) but UTP (SFP+) is also still an option.

I have the SFP+ (fiber) connected to a Zyxel switch and the WAN/UTP to my provider ONT which is a 10 GBps connection. I think I can also switch this around if I wanted to. Maybe in the future I wil do this to remove the ONT of my provider and connect fiber straight to the RT-BE88U.

802.1q tagging is supported, I need to apply VLAN 300 to my provider this way.

Well. I am using the 2.5G WAN/LAN port for my WAN and both the 10G port and the SFP+ port (with a multi-rate 10Gbe capable twisted pair module) on my LAN.

ethtool appears to confirm that both eth0 and eth9 are 10Gbe ports:
