Mom' made the house go wireless, so got rid of AX86u Pro and AC86, bought a ASUS RT-BE92U

Arriving this evening, any suggestions / quick tips I should know that I won't going from the AX86u?

Selling the AX and keeping the AC as an emergency spare.

This swap of equipment is not an upgrade and it can’t replace 2x routers in AiMesh for range. Kind of pointless expense.

I am unable currently to stream 4k to my SHIELD upstairs from where the AX is down, and I've tried the AC in 3 other positions, my laptop can't transfer files to/from my local unraid server which has to sit by the router, and transfers really jank the wifi.

Have you tried:

AX86U Pro router <wireless> AC86U media bridge <wire only> SHIELD

Inspect the router Wireless Log to see the strength (NSS and Tx Rate) of the dedicated media bridge connection.

Everything seems great, but my NVIDIA SHIELD Pro 2019 can't seem to connect to the wifi. I told it to forget it and tried multiple times / restarts, just won't connect even when the signal bars are near top. "I had to turn off WiFi 7 mode which is stupid because I have older devices that have no issues with wifi 7 on.... Also WiFi 7 is backward compatible"

But elsewhere it seems to be a wifi6 issue?

You'll need to find a WiFi 6 bridge with an Ethernet port

I mean, yeah, I can do that, pretty much what I had at one point but using the AC678U as the 'WiFi 6 bridge with an Ethernet port' but it was still not enough throughput to the AC to stream 100gig movie files.

What makes you think the new router will fix that? Your old router has better hardware including 5GHz radio. You are replacing higher end dual-band model with mid-range tri-band.

I read a comment earlier today that said something like if you get this router you won't have to worry about spotty coverage at all because it's just so good etc etc.

Well it was the other day, and I was in a rush to order something so got it.

Soo... are you saying send it back get something else?

Can't seem to fix it quickly so until the AX Sells I'm gonna use that as mesh and ethernet the shield into it.

You would be better to get another AX to use as an AiMesh node. Using the AC86U as an AiMesh node with the AX86U Pro will limit the 5 GHz channels and bandwidth to what the AC86U can do which is no DFS channels and no 160 MHz. And, you may need to use just WPA2 with your shield.
As you have been told, you will gain nothing with a BE router over the AX86U Pro. Send the BE back and get another AX86U Pro and enjoy the performance with fewer problems related to the WIFI 7 beta routers!

IT's £40 more than the AX, why not just keep both and have some future-proofing in my back pocket?

What I'm saying is you did a mistake (1) replacing RT-AX86U Pro with RT-BE92U. It won't give you better range. You clearly don't know how Wi-Fi works. Your clients mostly define the range, not the router. Another mistake (2) is buying hardware first and then asking questions. You are wasting time and money on trial and error experiments.

Not that it's any of your business but I did a bit of research and then used my best judgement to make the purchase, I'm not just firing anything at the wall and seeing what sticks.

OBviously I didn't research well enough, I GET IT, stfu already what is with the open hostility? Almost 40 still dealing with this crap on fora.

You're right, sorry. It's yours now, deal with it. There is a big thread with stories around this hardware here:

Just to let you know any router you buy in the UK will be limited to 20dBm or 100mW on 2.4GHz band and 23dBm or 200mW on 5GHz band non-DFS range. Any router. If you have read recommendations from someone not in your region - they don't apply to you.

Good luck!

I had a similar issue with my Shield Pro with an RT-AX86U router and the solution was to toggle on "Allow low power channels" under the Shields General Settings/Network & Internet. It doesn't make sense because my Wifi signal was reasonably strong.

As Tech9 mentioned, you did take a downgrade, don't get mad at him. Facts are just facts, you're replacing a quality 4x4 5ghz AX router for a 2x2 5ghz BE router. If the 5ghz didn't penetrate where you needed, then the 6ghz certainly won't, so those 2x2 streams are not helpful. There is a reason the BE92U costs less than either the BE86U or BE88U, despite having the 'larger' model number.

Depending how you're streaming said files, you may need to tweak some settings in whatever-that-is... my Shield Pro 2019 is connected via 5GHz at -56dBm and 866/866 Mbps (which is the maximum possible speed that device can support), pulls down ~480 Mbps (tested with Analiti) and plays everything perfectly fine.

Swapped my GT-AXE16000 to a GT-BE98 Pro mostly for the MLO WiFi 7 features, but it had no problems on the other router either.
