Synology will try to lock you into using their branded drives

ServeTheHome's comments here (and there are other reports too). Sigh, guess my next NAS will not be from Synology.
Have to agree, even Tom's HW reporting this. o_O

As I'm looking to replace our old DS412+, that has mainly been our file, media &photo server, - I've been eagerly thinking about the DS225+ or DS425+ (opt in for surveillance in future). But with WD Red+ HDD running for over a decade and still 0 bad sectors - I sure will trust and want red+ for the next NAS as well.

So now looking into what are the options (Building own NAS not an option)

Yeah, I'm not into the DIY NAS scene either; nothing wrong with that, but I'd rather spend my time elsewhere. Not sure what the next answer is though. I used to use a Netgear NAS but got disenchanted with that equipment: underpowered and a shade buggy. QNAP seems to have some buzz but also a very sketchy security track record --- and if I can't trust the company to do security updates, what was it I was paying for again? Suggestions appreciated.

They did get a fair amount of security issues over the years, but they generally do a proper job at fixing them after they are reported. I still wouldn't trust exposing a QNAP to the Internet tho, aside from their VPN server. But then, I probably wouldn't trust any of their competitor there either.

QNAP and Asustor are probably the two best alternatives to Synology if you want a similar all-in-one product.

From the customer side - lot of angry eyes perhaps for existing customers
From the business side - this is kind of an "own goal" in soccer/football speak...

Anyways, a tone-deaf PR from Syno - hopefully they pull it back.
