    On the server, with the VPN Details option set to 'general' is 'client will use VPN to access' set to 'both'? On your client, with the VPN client running, use a web browser to navigate to whatsmyip.org and see if it returns the external IP address of your (router) VPN server.

    I don't know. I may be wrong but I have a vague recollection that turning on compression makes the encryption insecure so it's possible that the client refuses to work with it. I tore some hair out before I found and tried changing this setting.

    Open your routers web interface VPN -> VPN Server tab -> VPN Details - Advanced. Compression is near the bottom. Set it to none.

    ColinTaylor spotted that you have compression turned on, did you turn it off (on the server). I had very similar problems with the OpenVPN client app until I turned it off.
