Command Line Questions for Stock ASUS Firmware - RT AX86U Pro and DDNS

Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply. I figured out why "service restart_ddns" wasn't doing what I expected after my script detected a new Public IP. I can see in the syslog that restart_ddns was returning Oct 8 10:06:42 rc_service: service 30986:notify_rc restart_ddns Oct 8 10:06:42 ddns: IP...

Command Line Questions for Stock ASUS Firmware - RT AX86U Pro and DDNS

Hello, I have an ASUS RT AX86U Pro running the latest stock firmware -- 3.0.0.6.102_34314. I would like to avoid running Merlin if possible. My router is behind another ISP fiber router so I have a double NAT issue (I tried PPPOE but I lose my IP address periodically and never get a new...

ASUS Dual WAN Failover, Then Failback, Leaves Secondary LAN in "Hot Standby"

Hello @Kingp1n, Can you tell me what exactly isn’t working with the ASUS version of Failover. I’m finding it working perfectly except for this one issue where after Failback I have the Seconday WAN in “Hot Standby” instead of “Cold Standby”. Is this something the script you linked to fixes...

ASUS Dual WAN Failover, Then Failback, Leaves Secondary LAN in "Hot Standby"

PART 2 NOW I PLUG FIBER CABLE BACK INTO ASKEY ROUTER After Failback, Primary WAN connected and Secondary WAN in “Hot Standby”. BAD! Primary WAN (ppp0) is UP and has a public IP address again: ppp0 Link encapoint-to-Point Protocol inet addr:88.1.192.55 P-t-P:192.168.144.1...

ASUS Dual WAN Failover, Then Failback, Leaves Secondary LAN in "Hot Standby"

Hello all, I have an RT-AC68U with 386.12.4 firmware. I am successfully running a Dual WAN with the Secondary WAN set up for Failover + Failback. (I'm actually kind of surprised it works so reliably, given the many references I'v seen in this forum to a user-script to take the place of the...

WANFailover Dual WAN Failover ***v2 Release***

Hello @Ranger802004 , Thank you for your very hard work. You have obviously put a huge amount of time into this project. I am wondering if you can tell me whether your WAN failover solution will solve my specific problem? I have an ASUS RT-AC68U with the latest Merlin FW. My primary WAN is a...

    Blank page when logging in

It's 4+ years later and something similar just happened to me -- only I was trying to reach a router over the Internet 6000 miles away. I got the login screen but after that no page would load. Looking at the macOS safari console screen, I could see that the element that was hanging on the...

Which DDNS services support ipv6 address updates?

Oh, and just to be clear, if I set the IPV6 address in the DDNS record, I did not have to override the server address in the iPhone OpenVPN client. If I did NOT set the IPV6 address in the DDNS record, I had to enter the router's IPV6 address in the "Server Override" field in the VPN client.

Which DDNS services support ipv6 address updates?

Hello @Logi . I honestly don't know exactly how this is working. You might want to try to install the Asuswrt-Merlin firmware if the stock firmware doesn't have the needed IPV6 setting. In my case, I simply enabled passthrough and rebooted my router and then I could see that the router got...

Which DDNS services support ipv6 address updates?

Hi @glens. I too assumed the IPV6 address would remain constant but I called Xfinity tech support to ask and they said "it will change from time to time". It's possible the guy had no idea what he was talking about. As I only just enabled IPV6 yesterday, I haven't seen any changes yet...

Which DDNS services support ipv6 address updates?

My mobile phone provider (T-Mobile) seems to be causing issues for accessing my home via any VPN. While in the past when I was on Sprint, I could use OpenVPN from my phone to my house, now that I'm on T-Mobile, I'm not passing any data through the VPN. I connect okay -- both the ASUS RT-AC86U...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Hello @sojomy . Unfortunately I can no longer test out your possible "solution" although it sounds very promising. After nearly 2 months of making no progress with high-level ASUS technical support, I decided to return the router. I'm still just using my old RT-AC68U on one end and my...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Hi @seabass. Thanks for chiming in. It's good to hear I'm not alone. As I said in my posts, I get crashing regardless of whether the AX router is the "server" or the "client". You seem to be slightly luckier, although one day I'm sure you'd like to have an AX router on both sides. Would...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Okay, so I tried the following experiment. After disabling the OpenVPN server on the Boston/USA side, I updated my new RT-AX86U Pro router on the Spain side to asuswrt-merlin 388.2 and enabled OpenVPN server on it and exported the client OVPN config file. Then I imported the OVPN on the...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Hello again @ColinTaylor @RMerlin, I received a replacement RT-AX86U Pro this morning and set it up with the default ASUS FW (including OpenVPN 2.4.12). Once again, all the basic functions work, but when I import my OVPN file and enable the VPN, I was able to observe the same kernel crash...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Hi Colin, Thanks also for chiming in. The “server” router is running 386.10, so that has OpenVPN 2.6.0. I’m going to update it tomorrow to 386.11 once my kids finish with their remote work for the day. But, it’s already on 2.6.x so I don’t think that should matter. My VPN setup is unusual...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Hi @RMerlin. Thanks for chiming in above. I realize you are all volunteering here but I'm a little disappointed in the responses I've gotten. Perhaps you missed my comment earlier in this thread. My OpenVPN Client Configuration works fine on an RT-AC68U that has been upgraded to the latest...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

I’m not an expert here but as you can see from the logs, both routers are running the same version of OpenVPN -- 2.6.3. The configuration works on the RT-AC68U. The RT-AX86U Pro crashes. Also, the latest stock ASUS firmware for the RT-AX86U Pro includes a much older version of OpenVPN -- 2.4.12...

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

Also, to be clear. The OpenVPN Server and Client configurations were created by the Asuswrt-Merlin OpenVPN user interface running on the my RT-AC86U. So if there is something wrong with the configuration, the Asuswrt-Merlin openvpn management may be the source of the issue.

Starting OpenVPN with TAP Client seems to crash RT-AX86U

@octupus, please allow me to be more precise. Can you please say which line in the log do you believe explains the problem? And do you not see that same line in the log for the RT-AC68U, which works fine with the same openvpn client configuration.
