N router that supports SSH login

Very informative and helpful. Thanks a lot!

N router that supports SSH login

Does anybody know if any of the popular N routers support SSH login? I'm currently using a WRT54GL with the Tomato firmware, which allows me to create an SSH tunnel to secure my remote browsing sessions (and get into my home network). I find the feature invaluable. I know the following...

    WRT610-N Emule issue

Double-NAT is tricky to handle well. Is there a compelling reason you need the modem to be a router? If not, you can set the modem to bridge mode and use the router itself for routing. This will result in only one subnet in your network and make everything easier.

Setting up my new media server with a DIR-655, slow speeds

Is this from the N notebook or G notebook? Is it Mbytes or mbits?

    Self-built NAS

For Intel platforms, I recommend a G31 motherboard, coupled with an entry-level C2D processor such as the E5200. Way overkill for a NAS but comes in handy if your box has to pull any double duty. If you want a cheaper solution, a dual-core Celeron that OP uses is a good alternative, but I would...

New build, with what I can get here...

Either one will support your storage/streaming needs just fine; the first one is actually overkill as the E5200 is a very powerful processor. You do save a bunch of money going with a used system. On the other hand, the new system, like you said, can be used for a lot of different things in the...

    DIR-655 Firmware v. 1.30 removes 802.11B

You're missing the point. The point is not getting rid of 802.11b; it's about getting rid of a significant feature, preventing firmware downgrading should the user regret such a change, and only mentioning about these two points in release note item No. 9 and No. 10.

Quiet box for one or two disks

I can't hear the fan anyway as the NAS is in another room. :) It's funny that people in the DNS-323 support forum used to complain about "loud" fans that interrupted their sleep. After the latest firmware upgrade, at least the same number of people now complain about fans not running when...

Quiet box for one or two disks

The 2-drive D-Link DNS-323 stops the fan if the temperature is lower than 43C (with the latest firmware).

restrict port forwarding to a domain

My WRT54GL, flashed with third-party Tomato firmware, allows one to specify a source address range for each port-forward rule. It also support SSH tunneling. Since I'm running an additional mod to Tomato, the firmware supports OpenVPN as well. To connect securely from a remote location to...

    Adaptec 5805 or Qnap 509?

You sure you want a P4 box as NAS? I use mine as a space heater. :D

Concurrent dual band routers vs single/non-concurrent dual band routers

The DIR-655 has a 5GHz radio? That's news to me.

Wireless client access: Alternatives to hard configured password?

FWIW, two companies ago, my work place had WEP with the hex passcode written on a whiteboard marked "do not erase". At the time, I was running WPA2-PSK with a random 63-character password at home.

    Antivirus Products

I used to be exclusively AVG, but now half of my PCs are running AVG, the other half running Avira AntiVir. I think both are good, although Avira AntiVir is claimed to have more coverage and less bloat than AVG in some reviews. Also if you ignore past trespasses and don't mind paid software...

    8-port gigabit router

May I recommend any router and an 8-port gigabit switch? Cheaper and more flexible to use.

Ubuntu as a NAS instead of Ubuntu Server

You are right; I forgot that. However, if one is so inclined, the kernel can be swapped out as well. In fact, I believe Ubuntu Server at some point came with both the server kernel and the generic kernel. Again, those kernels are not that much different anyway.

    Media Server Help

Dual-core atom boards may not be as energy-efficient as they could have been because of the chipset they commonly come with. Since you want 8 HDDs, you don't need a mini-ITX form-factor board, which will come with a price premium. Most likely you will get an ATX or mATX board. Here's my post...

Ubuntu as a NAS instead of Ubuntu Server

Ubuntu Desktop and Server editions are not that different. Basically it boils down to what packages come pre-installed. You can turn the server into a desktop by installing a graphic window manager; you can turn the desktop into a server by installing server packages (e.g. LAMP, etc).

I need a NAS that's as dumb as possible...

You want two separate volumes and will manually sync the contents between the two. Any current-generation NAS would support this. Most off-the-shelf NASes use a variant of the Linux file system such as ext2 or ext3. These are not proprietary file formats; NTFS, on the other hand, IS a...

Backup / Disk Imaging Software Recommendation

Not really a backup program, but I use Microsoft's free SyncToy 2.0 to synchronize my important folders to a file server. I use regular Windows scheduler to sync periodically.
