    RAID disks spinning up

Do you write to one drive then copy to the other? Or do you have it set up so that it automatically writes to both?

    RAID disks spinning up

I have my important files (my own docs and photos--things that cannot be replaced--backed up offsite). But let's discuss this: Why not rely on RAID as a backup? Beyond fire and theft, the only issue I can think of is file system corruption. Is that what you're getting at? Also, who cares...

    RAID disks spinning up

Oh definitely. This thing doesn't even have a fan. I was hoping that it was unique to this wimpy model and that others would have enough juice to spin them up at the same time. I'm using the NAS more as a central file server these days so when it takes 15 seconds to wake up, I notice it.

    RAID disks spinning up

I have a WD MyBook World Edition II.* The disks spin down after 15 minutes of idle time, which is fine. When they spin back up, though, the unit spins them up sequentially. The first disk spins up fully, then the second one spins up. It takes forever, especially since they're green drives...

    High-gain antennae for this situation?

    High-gain antennae for this situation?

Any recs on which program to use to detect activity on the neighboring SSIDs? Agreed about the client--on the receiving as well as the transmitting end. I have a suspicion that either my Thinkpad Edge is a poor wireless performer generally, or Windows 7 can't stream AVIs to save its life. My...

    High-gain antennae for this situation?

Okay, answering my own question here. I grabbed a pair of the Linksys 7dBi antennae from ebay for $20. I'm not sure that they increased my overall signal strength, but they seem to have increased its consistency. inSSIDer reports my network's RSSI as -50 give or take; however, compared to...

    High-gain antennae for this situation?

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I'm trying to improve the performance of my trusty old WRT54G (v4--the antennae can be removed). I live in a large 60s-era apartment building with concrete floors, masonry (plaster) walls, and intermittent load-bearing steel beams. My apartment is...
