    Major Issues w/RT-AC86U

@OzarkEdge Good point! Hadn't thought of that! :) @indark Yeah, maybe a UPS is a good idea. I don't have or otherwise, need one, but maybe don't need a very powerful or expensive one if it's only for the router. Also, are you saying you've had a good warranty experience with Asus? Please...

    Major Issues w/RT-AC86U

I agree, it "should" be editable. If someone can show me how to edit a title in this forum, I would be appreciative. And yes, I did eliminate unverified reviews for the AC68. Same percentage. If anything, the longer a router is out, I would assume lower ratings as longer-term problems crop up...

    Major Issues w/RT-AC86U

@OzarkEdge I am NOT "proclaiming" anything. I DO wish I could add a "?" to my title, but the Forum doesn't have that option. My router is trouble free, I am in awe of the Merlin firmware and I couldn't be happier with its performance. But I am worried at the prospect of failure, not just for the...

    Major Issues w/RT-AC86U

While I agree with many of the comments about Amazon and their reviews, this seems slightly different. Many of the one-star reviews are speaking of radio failures/total failures of this model, NOT configuration issues. @ColinTaylor In the US anyway, the numbers I quoted (27%/132 total 1-star...

    Major Issues w/RT-AC86U

Does anyone know why fully 27% of the Amazon purchasers give this router 1 star? This is 132 purchasers talking about the 2.4 GHz radio failing in a short period of time or the router otherwise dying. This is WAY too many people to be a statistical anomaly. I bought this router recently, I'm...

    TLS Errors

@eibgrad Nothing that I know of, other than the VPN @ColinTaylor Ok, so it sounds like "nothing to worry about"?

ExpressVPN setup (app vs. manual configuration) in Asus routers

Great analysis. I'm learning A LOT about this piece. Thanks!

    RT-AC68U as repeater at hotel

If an important consideration for you, AFAIK, the HooToo (cute name) does not support VPN. I own the GLI-AR300M-EXT. Only $45 on Amazon. Does this like charm. Also has VPN capability.

ExpressVPN setup (app vs. manual configuration) in Asus routers

I think you are correct (and lots of good information, THANKS). However, I think you are underestimating/understating the capability of the AES-NI instruction set. The AC86U CPU is about 2 1/4 times as fast as the AC68. But OpenVPN throughput is 5X+.

    Problem w/AC-86U Tethering

    Later Merlin? I'm on 384.10_2

    ASUS RT-AC86U firmware release 3.0.0.4.384.45713

I'm on Merlin. What is the usual time frame for these type of updates to be rolled into a Merlin release?

    Problem w/AC-86U Tethering

Thank you So Much for responding. I know that this may seem to be a small problem in the larger scheme. I tried the other USB port as you suggested. Same behavior. Phone cannot "see" the USB port unless/until an unplug/replug. I don't want to put the vendor/Asus through the expense of a swap if...

    ASUS RT-AC86U firmware release 3.0.0.4.384.45713

Has this fixed the "Devices on Network Map keep vanishing" issue?

ExpressVPN setup (app vs. manual configuration) in Asus routers

@eibgrad How does what you say apply to routers with encryption specific SOC CPUs such as the AC86U?

    TLS Errors

I'm getting these errors in my Router Log (AC68U running latest Merlin). Anything to worry about or benign? Any adjustment to try? TLS Error: unknown opcode received from [AF_INET]207.189.2.3:443 op=20 TLS Error: Unroutable control packet received from [AF_INET]207.189.29.3:443 (si=3...

(VPN) What does redirect internet traffic: All do?

AFAIK, Kill Switch is only available when you select Policy Rules......however, you can use CIDR notation to select your entire network to go through the VPN (instead of listing one at a time) in one entry on the selection list (depending on your network, something like 192.168.1.0/24)...

ExpressVPN setup (app vs. manual configuration) in Asus routers

@Marin Were you ever able to figure out the "secret sauce" for ExpressVPN+Merlin=same speed as ExpressVPN Router App?

    Vulnerability in Multiple VPN Applications

This is only a concern if you run a VPN server (not a client). In any case, even with a server, for this vulnerability to be an issue, the hacker has to ALREADY have control of your system by some other means, in which case you are already SOA.

    VPN recommendation

I've used Windcsribe since their inception. They have a very generous freemium model, so you can see if they meet your needs without spending a dime.

Meet Algo, the VPN that works

If your goal is privacy AND you implement this well, the model works. However, if your goal is anonymity, this won't help.
