    AC86U overheating

Don’t waste your time and money with the USB fan. Fix the root cause which is the heat pad between the CPU and the heat sink. It takes about 30 min but then the CPU temp drops 20-25C immediately without any active cooling. I could not find the exact copper thickness so ended up using the pad...

    AC86U overheating

Replacing the thermal pad is the way to go. I did it on both of my ASUS routers and the CPU temp dropped 25 C immediately. I don’t suggest the fan option. The issue is with the heat not transferring from the CPU to the heat sink. The passive heat sink itself is satisfactory.

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

Yes. I cleanup both the board and the heat sink with alcohol.

Yes. The hardest part of the process is to open up the case but other than that not too complicated.

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

I received the Thermalright thermal pad from amazon yesterday and replaced the one on the CPU last night. The temperature went from upper 90's C to 65. I am quite impressed with the result.

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

The 86 is an evolutionary successor of the 68 series. The 2 areas where it shines compared to the 68 is: the significantly better 5 GHz performance and SmartConnect helps devices to migrate between 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz.

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

I have been using the Asus routers for over 10 years starting with 66 then the 68 and now 2 of the 86's. I think the heatsink is engineered to fail over time and probably a percentage of them has problems out of the factory but in general they are still one of the best on the market. I don't...

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

Thanks for the info. I am the original owner for the one that is running at 97-98 since 2018 and I only recently observed the CPU turn down due to high temp. Otherwise it has been very stable. I got the second one from ebay last year (also 2018 model) as well but running at 86. A few days ago I...

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

Thanks a lot for the info. At the end I decided to try to just replace the thermal pads with a new set of Thermalright 2.5 mm Thermal Pads and see how much that means. My 2 current 2018 made routers running at 86 C and 97 C. If that's not enough then I will try the copper pad option next.

    AC86U Heatsink Mod

Thanks a lot for the detailed info. I have 2 of these routers and one of them keeps shutting down CPU1 due to high temp (97-98 C) and the other running at 87 C. Is the suggested solution for the CPU "paste+copper+paste"? What the right thickness for the copper pad? The article said 1.5 mm with...
