managing a UPS over a network

thanks for those, ill read up on the links to get up to speed. what i meant was that i have 2 UPS’s at my disposal. an APC BE550G and a Cyberpower CP600LCD. i could install them with each one connected to mains power. I would reserve one alone for my NAS, and try to configure NUT to do proper...

managing a UPS over a network

rethinking my logic … i think that UPS’s are designed to kill battery power by default, and that would mean the NAS does not sense power input and will not reboot automatically which is what i don’t want to do. if that behavior can be changed in NUT conf, great. otherwise i would fall back on...

managing a UPS over a network

thanks for this info, could you kindly point me to a guide on how to modify the conf file ? i would have to do that via ssh on my NAS unfortunately the NAS is barebones and UI does not support any kind of parameter settings for what to do when the UPS signals it is running on battery. its...

managing a UPS over a network

i know this is a complicated way to try and manage a UPS device remotely, just wondering if anyone has tips/suggestions maybe the only option is a network managed UPS …

managing a UPS over a network

i have a cyberpower CP600LCD UPS. when it is directly attached to my computer via usb, i can use Powerpanel Business Edition (ppbe) to access the UPS dashboard and manage it. unfortunately this UPS is not a network enabled UPS, so it does not have it’s own NIC and no built-in web gui. ppbe...

what do the underscore releases indicate ?

for merlin asuswrt release firmwares, i noticed the same base version has more than one release indicated by _# such as "386.3_0", "386.3_2", the higher index is newer, just wondering if they're considered major changes.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

you are correct, sorry for my mistake on the notation. reason i posted is to learn if the new implementation mentioned is something that needs to be documented in my notes for future reference and in case i have to reset a wifi connection on the client side. some of my LAN devices are setup...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

i forgot about the guest network difference, with respect to IP assignment. i allow my work computer on one of my guest wifi broadcast only which cannot see my LAN (isolated from my network). sorry about missing that.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

been keeping an eye on when the next release is coming for the AX86U, thanks for posting. i prefer to wait for the release channel so when this is available there, i will download it. could you please clarify what the new hostname implementation means, i use static IP assignments to my LAN...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

thanks John, my thinking is that an ext4 bare drive can be easier to work with in case of a recovery along the lines of pulling the disks from a dead unit. unless the data integrity of btrfs is that much better than ext4 ?

    questions about Synology SHR ....

would a synology nas lock you into btrfs if you chose shr or shr2 ? i think it also offers ext4 fs onboard

    questions about Synology SHR ....

just turned off the drive 'sleep' function of my NAS. thanks for that advice .... there are N300's in the NAS, but the external backup is MG08's - that enclosure doesn't park the heads on the drives, so i think it keeps platters spinning. i do only power-cycle it when i need it. perhaps i...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

regarding Seagate spinning platters, i recently had one 2.5" form-factor Seagate fail on me, it came out of an Xbox One. could not run tests on it because it was in bad enough shape where CyrstalDisk Info could not load it up. i also have an older 1.5TB (2x750GB) external usb backup drive...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

this is one compelling reason to head in the synology direction. i think it was asked within the thread but I did not address: do I really need boat-loads of storage ? -- answer: no, absolutely not. at least not in the context you might see based on your experience. i'm a small-time home...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

thank you everyone for the expert advice, will be digesting it over time to figure out what my next steps should be .... it's nice to get expert and knowledgable feedback, especially on forums these days ...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

noted on your points, thanks for the detail it is good to reference. it is also helpful trying to understand what i'm getting with SHR and SHR2. my initial notions is that there is some redundancy. i suppose that SHR doesn't qualify as having a true duplicate of a single drive in the array...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

i have had fairly good experience with most spinning platters in the past, save for a few that went sour over the years. i recently went to some expenses (over $1K) to have all the drives i have right now, and i am sure it's completely unnecessary to go thru that expense all over again for an...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

interesting find … will check it out. though not much of a fan of the bleeding edge of software technology, that includes AI as a platform. software updates are the cat and mouse diet that all these vendors and manufacturers are pitching to the public to accelerate planned Obsolescence and...

    questions about Synology SHR ....

all great advice ! strategy-wise, keeping my raid1 powered down until a backup is needed seems to make sense. used to be backup-fanatic and ran jobs nightly. it occurred to me that i could be aggravating that unnoticed data corruption nerve by forging ahead that way. so, backed off a bit...
