Running Asuswrt-Merlin firmware in a VM, Docker, Virtualisation

I have not vetted this site, so please use due diligence. As the old general contractor I worked with to pre-install network wiring into a new building said, "you rarely get what you expect, but you always get what you inspect"! Azeria Labs - Emulating ARM Router Firmware. This uses QEMU on...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.5 is now available

Dirty upgrade from 5_beta1 to 5_0 on an RT-AX3000 (using RT-AX58U firmware). All looks good. Thanks!

    386.5 Alpha1?

Dirty upgrade from 386.4 to 386.5_alpha2 with RT-AX58U firmware late Friday. It's been stable for almost 48hrs now for my simple setup on an RT-AX3000. Simple setup is home-built utilities (openssh, rsync, vim, etc.) on a USB drive, running a SOCKS5 proxy server as well as a personal home page...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 is now available

It looks like there was a switch to using squashfs inside the firmware. The various firmware versions I have online are below. The first line is the most recent stock firmware (AX3000s use AX58U firmware). Note the name end change from pureubi.w to puresqubi.w for the Merlin firmwares, and how...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 is now available

Dirty upgrade from Beta3 on an RT-AX3000 (RT-AX58U firmware). Looking good so far.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

Dirty upgrade from 386_4.beta2->386_4.beta3 on an RT-AX3000 (RT-AX58U firmware) has been up and running for 24 hrs on my relatively simple setup (home-built OpenSSH_8.8p1 and OpenSSL 3.0.1 creating a SOCKS5 proxy plus the firmware's lighttpd using my custom config, all running off a USB drive).

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

OK, thanks. I've developed a work-around. Since 'stubby' (for DNSoverTLS), can use the system hosts file, and I append my hosts lists to it via my usb_mount script, I set dns_probe_host to something I defined and dns_probe_content to its matching IP address. Now network map keeps my active WAN...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

Hi! I'm not pinging anything, that I know of. Both dns_probe and wandog are disabled. Here's my current nvram output: ax: nvram show | egrep 'dns_probe'\|'wandog' dns_probe=0 dns_probe_content= dns_probe_host= wandog_delay=90 wandog_enable=0 wandog_fb_count=4 wandog_interval=90...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.4 beta is now available

Thanks for resolving the /opt issues in alpha3. However, I am still experiencing the condition where the Network Map briefly shows a working internet connection, but then switches to 'Disconnected', and the wan link LED always shows red, instead of the previous white (up through 386_4.alpha2). I...

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

I'm going to add another comment about the WAN LED and the GUI Network Map under alpha3. My WAN LED is always red, and the Network Map in the GUI briefly shows a working internet link, then gets overwritten with "Internet Disconnected". This briefly correct, then incorrect behavior is...

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

I use the nvram variable 'script_usbmount' to define a script to run after my USB drive is mounted. I chose it instead of the Merlin user scripts as it's recognized in both the stock Asus firmware as well as Merlin firmware. In the stock firmware there is a RO opt directory holding symlinks to...

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

Performed a dirty upgrade on an RT_AX3000 from RT-AX58U_386.4_alpha2-g952c6bdecc to RT-AX58U_386.4_alpha3-g092f25da96. Basics are fine. However, /opt has now changed to a directory with a 'scripts' subdirectory, rather than the previous symlink, 'opt -> tmp/opt'. I've changed my usb_mount...

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

If you've enabled Merlin user scripts, create or edit a 'services-start' one to add the line: /usr/sbin/cru d WireGuard It won't hurt to try to remove a non-existent entry. That will remove the every minute wgc restart thus eliminating the log entries.

Ah, thanks. I was running 'chrony' instead of the built-in ntpd, and this 3rd alpha load/reboot was taking so long to time sync, I gave up and forced it. (My usb_mount scripts wind up logging every 2 seconds until time is updated.) I wound up re-enabling the built-in ntpd and commenting out the...

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

No add-ons. I'm running the RT-AX58U firmware on an RT-AX3000, and have never even setup a VPN, so I'm not sure how I got the 'wgc_XXX' variables in my nvram. Since it was asked in other posts, this was a dirty upgrade from alpha2-ga85421da82 to alpha2-g952c6bdecc. I don't remember this issue...

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

Hmm ... I have an RT-AX3000 (RT-AX58U firmware), and once I removed the cron entry, it did not come back, so I had concluded it was a first-run issue. Sorry it appears to be more complicated.

I, too, have the wgc nvram settings and log entries. Lucky for me, my usb_mount script logs a 'cru l' command to verify my socks5 proxy starts/stops. It shows an entry of: */1 * * * * service restart_wgc #WireGuard# which one can eliminate from the command line with: cru d WireGuard stopping...

SIX months since Merlin included updated Asus GPL - what's cooking at Asus ???

OpenWRT's lack of 802.11ax support is why I switched to Asus routers for my AX purchase. I had used and built OpenWRT for my old routers, including a kernel upgrade to 5.4 in my last build, but looking today at their website, it looks they have AX support for just two (unknown-to-me brand)...

    Router temperatures

Is the router on a wire shelf (i.e. mostly open from underneath) or mounted in some other way? Thanks!

    [ 386.4 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

Not arguing, just adding some detail ... Ah, found the backport page at wireguard.com and 4.1.52 (what my router is running now), is on the list with a successful build. Maybe that driver can be added, as the kernel version is supposed to perform better than the user space Wireguard. I had...
