    Question about NAS/Server arrangement

18TB isn't much, at all. And I don't like the fact that they choose to limit you on the amount of space you use. Why????

how to control Hard Drive light from Linux?

Hi all, Does anyone know how to control a hard drive light from Linux? I'm building a 24bay Linux File server which will run software RAID and I need an easy way for the engineers to see which HDD has gone bad. Most of our NAS devices has 2 lights on the hard drive cages and they...

slow network throughput, how to improve?

I'm trying to measure network throughput, transferring data from one server to another. The transfer speed was only 29.1MB/s on a GBe network

slow network throughput, how to improve?

Hi all, I would like some input on this one please. Two CentOS 5.5 XEN servers, with 1GB NIC's, connected to a 1GB switch transfer files to each other at about 30MB/s between each other. Both servers have the following setup: CentOS 5.5 x64 XEN 3.0 (from xm info: xen_caps...

    Lights-Out Management for Home Servers

Hi, I'm very interested to see further progress on this, and even some pics of your setup. How stable / reliable is your "home-made KVM"?

    Question about NAS/Server arrangement

I recently started looking at using ZFS purely for it's performance. But id OpenSolaris is dead (I didn't know this since I've never used it) then what other options are available for stable & high perfomance ZFS servers, similar to Nexenta? Nexenta, IMO is far too expensive to be competitive...

    First NAS. 1bay or 2bay

You're right, RAID isn't backup. A backup is only a backup if you have 2 copies of the data. That said, what you want todo is a form of backup, as long as you rotate those drives often enough. BUT, since the RAID rebuild takes a long time (could take several hours to a day) it might be better...

what is the network throughput on a Thecus 8800PRO NAS supposed to be?

Running the same tests as my original, on the iSCSI mount yields the following:

what is the network throughput on a Thecus 8800PRO NAS supposed to be?

It was actually a different test :) AFAIK, gigabit NIC's throughput is 125MB/s (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_device_bandwidths#Local_area_networks)which I'm not getting at all. So, I would at least like to max out the NIC and would have expected an 8 drive unit to be able...

RAID6 is only safe storage >1TB

From experience I can tell you that a RAID5 array with such large drives will fail at least 4 out of 6 times when you do a rebuild, especially when you're using the NAS device as well - which in most cases will be true. Rather use RAID6, or RAID 10 (or 1+0) which is faster than RAI10 for reliability

Starting to think about the next SNB NAS testbed

Tim it would be really great to see tests on the higher-end NAS devices, especially those with NIC load balancing, 8+ SATA/SAS HDD's and hardware RAID cards. Your test rig should be fine, but do you have a switch that can support Link Aggregation and Jumbo Frames?

Server or Nas for 10-person Architectural Firm

Don't take this the wrong way, but you should compare apples to apples, not pineapples. External USB HDD's are good for backups, but limited in speed and size. Depending on how much data you need, a second NAS device would be better. Most NAS devices can also automatically synchronize the...

    iscsi (target)

Yes, that's correct. They don't take SCSI drives, but SATA & SAS (8800SAS model) drives. No, they don't spam multiple physical devices. But, once you exported the iSCSI volumes to your PC you could setup software RAID on the iSCSI volumes since an iSCSI device appears as just another drive...

    Looking for a Business NAS

We brought a couple of Thecus devices in December and I'm very happy with them. The 3 support cases I had was also answered quickly enough for me to be satisfied with it. I also considered the Netgear devices but was put off with the fact that for 3x more I don't have RAID 10 support, which is...

Can you add more drives using standard RAID?

I can't vouch for Drobo or Netgear, but I dot have some Thecus 8800PRO's in the office. I setup the one with 2x RAID 6 arrays with 4 drives each - to see how this works. At any given time I could take out a drive and put a new one in (either replacement, or larger) and it would automatically...

what is the network throughput on a Thecus 8800PRO NAS supposed to be?

Here's an interesting thing: Mounting the NAS (well, SAN in this case) directly via iSCSI and formatting the partition with ext3 yields the following results: Reading back is a bit slower: So using iSCSI does improve things a bit, but I would still expect better throughput. And I would...

Doesn't anyone use these types of NAS devices?

what is the network throughput on a Thecus 8800PRO NAS supposed to be?

Hi all, I recently got a Thecus 8800PRO (our supplier doesn't stock the 8800SAS versions) but I'm a bit disappointed in the network throughput I get from it. Using SMB I get about 40MB/s transfer, using rsync and only about 9Mb/s using NFS on average. Is this normal from a SATA based...

Where to get a Thecus N16000?

Hi all, Does anyone know what happened to, or where to obtain a Thecus N16000 ? It seems like a great piece of equipment: http://www.citrix.com/ready/partners/thecus/products/n1200n1600
