DSL modem must be NAT .. do I need a router?

Sorry for the delay. Here's a link to crude sketch. Across the top from left to right is the router being used only as an access point, the switch, and the Westell router. All cabling is Cat5E or 6. http://imm.io/3Ywv I'm considering that many of my issues are coming from a NAS itself, a QNAP...

DSL modem must be NAT .. do I need a router?

Westell 6100 modem. The router is a DLink WBR 2310 in bridged config. I'm now running the modem into my giga switch Dlink DGS 2208, along with my other gigabit capable devices .. the two pcs and the NAS .. and then a connection to the router. The router is connecting to my slower devices...

DSL modem must be NAT .. do I need a router?

I've tried to find an answer to this but cannot so maybe it's so elemental as to be obvious but I ask .. I have a home network consisting of an unmanaged giga switch, a 10/100 wireless router, a NAS, two Directv connections, two Windows boxes, a printer, and an internet connection via a...

slow network throughput, how to improve?

Just a quick thought .. are you using a managed or an unmanaged switch? An unmanaged switch with some low speed connections .. printers and like with 10/100 cards .. end up averaging the throughput and thus reducing max throughput that the switch will allow.

Finalizing my NAS choice and would love some feedback

The DS 710 is a great choice. It's as fast as you're gonna find and expandable to more drives if needed. I would have gotten one if it were not for my budget. I wound up with the QNAP 119P+ which is the fastest of the single drive models. Not as fast as the 710 though. I decided I don't want...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

Roush I think you're correct, this is as good as it's gonna get. I believe it has to do with the laptop hardware .. probably the bus speed for the built in nic. It makes sense because the read and write bandwidth is the same at 39-41 mb sec. Given that the giga speed is still about 3 times what...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

Changing the processor for background services made zero difference on XP. I'm looking at my laptop hard drive speed (it's the pc with XP on it) but it's a pretty fast Fujitsu drive. It was not set to read ahead so I changed that and it made zero difference. I enabled the memory for background...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

Roush I did some testing copying/pasting a 1 gb file from Win 7 64 bit , and from XP sp3. Win 7 was 52 mbsec read and 65 mbsec write .. about the speed of the NAS WP was capped at read and write around 40 mbsec. I checked cabling and also moved any 10/100 connections off my router...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

Wow, 00Roush I have to say I'm blown away by the work you've put into understanding what's going on behind the scenes . . after lots of reading I have a few questions regarding this copy of one of your posts from this thread which I also quoted below for reference .. As I understand it...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

Yep on the stack info .. if you were to compare XP's TCP/IP before SP .. let's say about 2.5, then the XP management was not optimized for broadband. However all that was taken care of in a few updates that were released prior to SP3. XP should be able to be just as fast, if not faster than...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

Thanks for the replies guys .. ntm1275 .. I bet the difference you're getting between Win7 and XP is in the drivers used. XP should be faster if anything, given the same situations .. it just has a little less overhead and doesn't virtualize the user data like Win 7 does. Just my opinion but...

Using NAS as local file use .. speed needed

On the face of it this might seem to be simple request .. to open and edit files on a NAS with reasonable speed. Let me give you some background though .. I bought a QNAP 119P+ for it's speed and after some testing and optimizing, etc I find it's actually SLOWER than a USB external...
