Asus-Merlin FW vs Tomato or DD-WRT for RT-AC66 or RTAC68 Routers

weak range I bought yesterday an AC66U...but i have to return it as the range was worse than the stock cable tb router/modem (Hitron CVE 30360).... Is this due to a firmware issue or may be due to a faulty device?
