Choosing Wifi Network Solution for multi level house

Okay I only know a few answers.. orbi cannot do two-hops. Everything has to be arranged in a 'star' configuration so the satellite would have to connect straight to the 2nd floor. The basement setting will be difficult. it seems from Tim's mesh system reviews that a two-hop performance is...

ASUS Expands 11ax Lineup And Sets Ship Date

"Continuing the fine Wi-Fi marketing tradition of link-rate inflation, the 4804 Mbps link rate specified for the 5 GHz radios comes not from 8 streams, but from using 160 MHz bandwidth with four streams." So, 160mhz pretty much fills up all available 5ghz spectrum, so if you max out both 5ghz...

    Which wireless router?

The x8 is a pretty high-spec router, it might be fine for you. Most any router should be handle the wire speed without problem. Wireless, on the other hand.... most clients are going to max out at 500-600mbps under ideal short range conditions (unless you have something rare with 3x3 or 4x4...

Keep Asus 1900P or Upgrade to Netgear R7800?

I don't think any of those devices are more than two-stream units, so you're not going to get any more peak speed. And the 1900p should be able to get 100mbps on either 2.4ghz or 5ghz at close or medium range. So yes, are you having any particular problems now?

    TP-Link Announces Amazon-Exclusive AC Router

It is weird that Amazon is selling it for more than they're selling the C7 themselves. maybe one pricing algorithm should talk to the other pricing algorithm.

    Time to replace R7000?

Netgear seems to still be releasing new firmwares for this model with security fixes, so if your only concern is security, it may not be that bad. You could also switch to a third party firmware which would have a more rapid development cycle if you want to put in the effort.

Linksys Velop Dual-Band Intelligent Mesh WiFi System Reviewed

Hmm, I guess if a user used Ethernet backhaul with these, it would take away a lot of the performance issues. But I don't know if there would still be a more compelling offering in that price range.

    What to pair with R7800?

if you're shooting for peak speed, get two of the 5300 models (either RT or GT)

Planning a major overhaul, critique my purchase plan!

What are the fastest wifi clients you have? Does anything have better than 2x2 wifi right now? If not, then no single client will directly benefit a lot from using a 4x4 AP like the Unifi HD. Are you contemplating buying three APs? Because at a list price of $350, that would make the Unifi...

Need advice on setting up home network

What are you using as a test client? Do you see interfereing 5ghz signals, besides your own? since I don't know what your walls are like, if you have a laptop or a android you could install a wifi analyzer app (I use netgear wifi analytics on android, I think InSSIDer is popular on windows)...

Need advice on setting up home network

Oh, the link rate is only 250mbps? Well that's no good. The things I can think of for 5ghz are: * verify both AP and client are using 80mhz bandwidth * free 5ghz channels (ideally the idea upper or lower range) * close range and no obstructions. * no power saving on the client Even then link...

Well now you've got me wondering what the secret VPE is used for!

    What to pair with R7800?

okay and that 500-600mbps is just the "link rate" of the connection, right? If it's the actual speed you're getting from a speedtest, then your work is pretty much done. It's difficult to get wifie speed much faster. If it's the link rate, that still means potentially 250+ in effective...

    New router for fiber

the r7800 has by far the fastest CPU so that will help if your VPN is using Open SSL encryption. I believe the stock firmware supports a download offloader as well.

Need advice on setting up home network

What are you using as your test client? most clients are 2x2 or even 1x1. So 2x2 has a max link speed of 833mbps, and max effective speed of around 400mbps, assuming everything is working great. What kind of reported link rates are you getting? You're completely avoiding 2.4ghz, right? I'm...

    AP VS MESH (Ethernet Backhaul)

RogerSC, when you say the 7800 is your main router, are you actually using the Wifi too? (or just as a wired router). CorruptedMind, if you use the R7800, and only the R7800, what coverage gaps are you left with?

    Asus RT-AC88U meshed with RT-AC3100

are you using AI mesh, or setting up a more traditional access point? Traditionally, you'd plug the Ethernet from upstairs into one of the 3100's LAN ports, not the WAN port.

Comcast Goes Nationwide With XFi Pod Wi-Fi Extenders

i dont' think Comcast cares too much about their customers using all of the bandwidth they buy. after all, dombining gigabit internet with a 1 Terabyte monthly data cap would mean running at full throttle for 3 hours. Comcast is probably mainly worried about reducing the amount of support...
