ADVICE: Extend my RT-AC86U to create a mesh

The AC68U supports AiMesh and is quite a bit less expensive. I bought 2 for a little more than the cost of one 86U.

    Repeater on differnet channel?

Very nice hack, worked like a charm. Thank you!

    Repeater on differnet channel?

On the repeater there is no setting for channel selection.

    Repeater on differnet channel?

The repeater is connected to the main router at 5ghz. The repeater's 2.4 channel change drops all connection to the main router. Why is the repeater automatically changing channels when the main is on a fixed channel? I supposed a complete system reset is the next step, but I'm really busy now.

    Repeater on differnet channel?

2x AC68U w/ Merlin 384.19 The repeater drops for a few seconds and the log shows channel adjusted. meanwhile the main router is set to channel 1 and the log there shows no changes. Jan 22 16:51:00 acsd: selected channel spec: 0x1007 (7) Jan 22 16:51:00 acsd: Adjusted channel spec: 0x1007 (7)...

Best router choices for Merlin support on a budget

That's a good deal. The 68U is a solid, well-performing unit That will reliably give you > 400 Mbps. You certainly don't need to spend 3x the money for a router for your 50/20 connection.

    Upgrade Asus RT-N66U

You might want to look at the AC68U. Very solid router that will radically outperform the N66 at a little more than half the price of the 86U. Merlin allows router-level ad blocking with Diversion. For me this is the primary benefit.

    Upgrade from AC66U_B1?

Bought two 68U's on sale for a fraction more than one 86U, and they more than satisfy all of my requirements. Would still be running the 66U's if they hadn’t died.

RT-AC68U or RT-AC86U Buying Advice Needed

I'm running a pair of 68U's on a 100 Mbps internet connection and get over 400 Mbps connections to all my devices. Sounds like a great deal, go for it.

    Extend or replace network router?

Agreed on the 2nd 68U. Enable the 5ghz band, it’s far faster that 2.4. Most mobile devices use it automatically. As for mesh vs repeater, you have to try both and see what works best. I found the repeater setup to be more stable than a mesh. For speed there is no difference between the two...

    Repeater mode and AiMesh

Waaaay to nerdy for me. It was all I could do to set up Merlin and Diversion. :)

    Wireless Printing

There are a number of free image management programs that have sophisticated print capabilities including nomacs and irfan. I use them specifically for printing images that Epson software will not allow.

    Repeater mode and AiMesh

I found mesh mode to be dumbed down - I lost control of the node and had no logs for it. I also lost site survey from the node - which is important for me because the routers are in separate buildings 150’ apart.

would anyone recommend 2 x RT-AC68U to create mesh network?

Due to mysterious occasional drops I've reconfigured the 68U mesh node as a repeater. RSSI & dBm are comparable, speedtest returns comparable results. The main difference is no drops.

WiFi 6 will be ready for adoption around the time WiFi 7 is released. Chasing the latest tech buys into accelerated planned obsolescence. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
