    Drive Extender discontinued on Vail

Yeah, I've read that statement. The thing I remember the best is the fast that he admits that changing to Linux will be a problem for ZFS. He claims a different filesystem will take its place (BTRFS no doubt), but btrfs is still experimental and buggy compared to ZFS which has been running is...

    Drive Extender discontinued on Vail

FreeNAS and CoreNAS merging? Is that wishful thinking on your part or an actual fact? Why would they merge? FreeNAS has just been completely rewritten by a new developer so I'm not sure if this is going to happen. Another reason this probably isn't going to happen is because CoreNAS is based...

Review Request, Amahi and Marvell Plug computer

Matt, The reason I prefer a drive pool technology is because I don't like the downsides that come with RAID. I've used RAID in the past so I know what they mean. Ok, so RAID offers me the option of speeding things up a bit. Is that important to me, as a home user? No. This is simply data...

    Drive Extender discontinued on Vail

Those are all alternatives yes... but not 100% equal to what Drive Extender did. UnRAID probably comes the closest, but from what I've read adding disks isn't as painless or at least as fast as with Drive Extender. (it takes several hours - as does rebuilding a damaged array) That's the...

Review Request, Amahi and Marvell Plug computer

Matt, From what I've read, you have the option now. When you setup the system, at a certain moment Amahi will ask you if you want to use Amahi for DHCP and DNS, only DNS or none of both. While I can see why they would like you to use Amahi for both DHCP and DNS (it does have certain...

Review Request, Amahi and Marvell Plug computer

I second this request! :) With the demise of Drive Extender from WHS, Amahi with its Greyhole technology might be the next best thing! Looking VERY much forward to a review! :)

    Drive Extender discontinued on Vail

By now we know a bit more about the real reason why they dropped DE (they weren't able to make it 'play nice' with the new SBS - but who cares about that anyway? It's a HOME server!)... I've been looking at a viable alternative since I've heard the news. And I've now stumbled onto Amahi...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 6: The Vista (SP1) Difference

Ah yes, that was exactly the article I meant. I guess time doesn't fly as fast as it sometimes seems. :) In my specific case Tim, do you think using jumbo frames would cause me problems? Every device on my Lan is capable of jumbo frames (D-link DIR-655 router and HP Procurve 1400 switch)...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 6: The Vista (SP1) Difference

Wow! Thanks for the extensive history lesson. I always like to read about these kind of facts. I understand better now. I know. The streaming part is not the problem here. It's the ripping part. See, to save time, I've opted to rip all the DVD's to an ISO file, and not to compress the...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 6: The Vista (SP1) Difference

Ah. So SMB2 is evloutionary rather than revolutionary. :) I find it strange Microsoft chose to develop a new 'standard' rather than to optimize the existing one, especially if you say they were forced to publish the specs. (and they could have got the same result by just optimizing SMB1)...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 6: The Vista (SP1) Difference

So this means that, if you were to re-do your Linux benches again, this time also altering the record/block size, you would reach comparable results? I know. Don't think I'd buy Server 2008 for home use, unless I could use a student licence or something. If not, I'll set my hopes for Home...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 6: The Vista (SP1) Difference

Congrats Tim on finally breaking the 100 MB/s barrier! :) But this does leave me with this question: I do get that the Vista SP1 speed improvements are because of optimizations with the SMB2 protocol as opposed to the regular SMB protocol. But does this mean this speed is only achievable...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 4: Ubuntu Server

You'd think that in that case the Gigabit ethernet interface would be the limiting factor. But even then, I don't think it would make a lot of difference, since there also seems to be a limiting factor determined by the cache size versus the size of the files you're copying.

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 4: Ubuntu Server

Indeed, interesting Adaptec card, and indeed nice it only needs PCI x4. I was going to use the Adaptec 5405 myself. Ok, so this card is PCI x8, but that's no problem since my motherboard has got more than one x16 slot on it. What I do find strange is that I can find this 5405 card cheaper...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 4: Ubuntu Server

So this means that, if you want to copy a lot of DVD ISO's (usually about 5 GB/file), you would need to use a 64 bit OS to be able to use more than 4 GB of RAM in order not to experience this limited throughput?

    Thecus N7700 Unleashed

My exact thougt. If NAS's start using some serious power (and start costing some serious dough - out of the league of most regular users anyway), what advantage is left over simply configuring a pc with a bunch of disks in it running Clarkconnect or similar? Not the speed. The footprint...

PoE, could somebody explain something to me?

Guess I spoke too soon. I stand corrected, and how! :)

    Some switch advice needed...

Thanks a lot Tim. This one will probably be it then... :)

PoE, could somebody explain something to me?

Aha! It makes sense now. Cheers Tim! I've looked around, and it seems there are no full Gigabit PoE switches yet? Oh well, guess when/if I need it, I'll simply add another PoE switch, like the ProCurve 2610 series.
