PoE, could somebody explain something to me?

Hi guys, I've never worked with Power over Ethernet (PoE), but I must say I find the technology intriguing. I might use this for some IP cameras around the house. But there's something I'm wondering. I know that with 100 mbit networks, not all eight wires in the UTP cable are used. So it...

    Some switch advice needed...

Correct. I already thought that might become a problem, thanks for confirming this to me. The LAN will be used for large file serving and media streaming, both video and audio. That's why I'm inclined to buy the more expensive 2510G-48, since that's a managed switch and if the opportunity...

    Some switch advice needed...

Hi guys, I need some quick 'n dirty switch advice... I want to setup a LAN. The router I'll be using will be the Draytek Vigor 2820n. Great router, with lots of features, but with only one downside... it's switch only comes with ONE gigabit port, the other three ports are 100 Mbit. I'm...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 4: Ubuntu Server

I must say I'm quite looking forward to this, since I wasn't able to find a single OpenFiler review online yet. Corndog, UNRAID has already been reviewed on this site, see here. On the other hand, it might be worth it to re-review it and compare the numbers. :)

Need some advice on a Switch

I could be mistaken, but isn't the 1400 series an unmanaged switch? In other words, it doesn't have an IP address of its own?

SSL based VPN for embedded routers?

I agree. Draytek routers are hands down the best and feature-rich routers I've ever had the pleasure to install...

    Netgear Nas Duo

There's a good chance you're not missing anything. Not all printers work when connected to a NAS. In fact, I'm even betting most of them don't, so it's a case of trial and error. In general, only the simplest printers work. If you're using a muti-functional, you're toast.

Windows Home Server, Yay or nay?

Yes, they do. Doesn't mean it doesn't work though. I'm guessing the only reason Microsoft recommends against using it is because if you do use RAID, you won't be using their proprietary Drive Extender technology. So it's simply a case of being a soar loser, nothing more.

Windows Home Server, Yay or nay?

Hi Matthi, Yes, I have already installed PP1. Matter of fact, I completely re-installed my WHS because I had already formatted the WHS server, never thinking of ever using it again. In short: PP1 solves a lot of issues with WHS. It's not a recommended upgrade, in my opinion it's a necessity...

I'm pretty sure they will. Those are some kickass drives!

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

You need Link Layer Topology Discovery for that. Download it here and install it. After that, your XP pc's will also be found on the network.

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 1: Introduction

Ok, update. I've just done the test and copied 4 DVD ISO's back to my desktop PC from my WHS. And you were right: constant speeds varied from 40 MB/s to 45 MB/s. After copying one file, the speed dropped immensely. (less than 5 MB/s) until the system hung. That's not good! Any idea...

That's a good alternative (and you can be sure I'll keep visiting SNB on a daily basis! :P)! Thanks Tim!

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 1: Introduction

Wouldn't that make one ounce of difference? I mean, with regards to buffering or CPU use or something? My main desktop is the aforementioned Gigabyte i965 mobo with 2 GB of Ram and an Intel E6600 CPU. The OS used is Windows XP Pro. The Windows Home Server runs on a Gigabyte P35 mobo, with 2...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 1: Introduction

First, sorry about the typo, obviously that should be a P35 motherboard, not P53! Currently I'm using the onboard network cards of both motherboards. My home PC's motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-965P DQ6 and the motherboard of my windows home server is a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R. I have...

    Login idle time

Tim, Could you please extend this to at least an hour or so? I haven't been able to follow the forums the past couple of weeks because I was on vacation, so I figured I'd do it today. Of course I had to catch up with dozens of posts. Unfortunately, I got called away from my pc. Not too...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 1: Introduction

I'm really looking forward to this series of articles Tim! Meanwhile, a week ago I gave Windows Home Server another try. As some of you might have read, I tried it before and my experiences with it were not good. But now there's Powerpack 1 and I decided to give it another try. I'm glad...

Broadband and Internet Security on 64 bit architecture with XP Pro 64 bit

The Draytek 2820 does both WEP and WPA, for up to 4 different SSID's if you want. It has all the wireless security on board you'll ever need. Just have a look at the online demo of the 2820's firmware. (wireless lan -> security)

Does untangle essentially do the same as pfsense? Or is pfsense more targeted towards the home user?

Broadband and Internet Security on 64 bit architecture with XP Pro 64 bit

Have a look at the Draytek Vigor 2820 series. It's dual one, with one of the WAN's being a DSL connection and the other a regular ethernet connection. This will be my next router. I've used Draytek in the past and found these routers to be the best and the stablest I've ever used...
