    one little minor detail I forgot to mention is that I have VoIP..........awhile back, when I had a security company come in to install the system..........nothing to do with the security system, he rewired my phone line so i can plug and use my VoIP in any phone jacks so I don't have to place it...

    I do see the box where the cat5 cables come into the basement, how can i determine if they wired a or b? when you say ....'as long as you use the same wiring everywhere'.....when I put the jackets/plugs on the ends of the cables (in the basement and the rooms), that both ends have to be wired...

    Hopefully I am posting in the correct forum...... Recently found out that my phone jacks are wired with cat5 and/or cat5e cables......this gives me an idea of installing ethernet drops + phone lines in the rooms of my house with the existing cat5 cables to minimize wifi/powerline/moca or range...

    just curious, is it an easy and straightforward process if I want to downgrade my FW to a lower version of Merlin's (from 378.56_2 to 378.55)? Same steps just as if I were upgrading? I can probably save my current configurations and restore once i downgrade? thank you. kd

    Yes, the previous FW was stock coz after i flashed with the new Merlin's FW, i do see .....Powered by Asuswrt-Merlin which i never saw before.

    Thank you everyone for your help. I managed to upgrade and running Merlin's latest FW 378.56_2, so far so good and hope will stay that way. now, learning to tweak. May I ask here or start a new post on how I can tweak to improve my wifi? thank you. Katie D

    I am not sure if I am on Merlin's FW or stock's......i assume it's Stock since it doesn't say Merlin's next to my FW...... so, if I were to go from Stock to Merlin, do i need to backup jffs folder? how? thanx. kd

    If you mean as being reachable over VPN, no. The concept of a VPN is to connect two networks together. Beyond that, you would have to start creating custom firewall rules, which would be quite tricky since the VPN effectively connects both networks together, it's not a client to client...
