It depends on what your needs are/how you are using it. Not beyond having your stuff up to date and decent security configured. It's not a question of "if" you'll get attacked; we are all always under constant attack.

Honestly, if all you have is an Xbox and a laptop, this router is completely unnecessary. You can get a better-suited one that will still be awesome for your needs. https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/rankers/router/view For those stubborn electrons that won't budge! I may be doing the...

You have an Xbox connected to the router and that's it? You don't have any other devices at all, besides your modem? My last console was a ColecoVision, so I know nothing about them today.

I'm getting the following entry every hour: user debug kernel [tdts_shell_ioctl_stat:256] Recv ioctl req with op 2 What does it mean?

What are your router's settings (what did you change from out-of-the-box), what devices you have connected to it and how, etc. You don't know that the import backup isn't also importing bad juju, defeating the purpose of the reset. Better to take the 10 minutes to fat-finger everything rather...

I get slowdowns and it eventually quits with SmartConnect enabled; hence, I had to disable it. Posting your configuration and setup would be helpful.

I got the firmware update available notification icon in the browser but I can't find a syslog entry indicating an update is available; is there one? I'd like to configure my syslog server to notify me when there is.

re: QoS. Like I said, "latency", not bandwidth. Higher bandwidth lessens QoS' impact but it doesn't eliminate its impact. Heh...I got a reply on one of my reports:

OK, I thought this 384 firmware fixed the crash and burn issue I had when SmartConnect was enabled but it did it twice in two days and it does it consistently when my wife comes home (no kidding). She has a Surface Pro 4 and an htc 10 smartphone. The router is fine all day and within about 30...

Oh, that's...different. Open a ticket and see where it goes, heh.

Hard not to conclude that it turns of the ethernet interface in standby mode.

I doubt they will and I wouldn't want them to. I want them to compile bug reports so the devs can fix them. I don't want them to "help" me to "troubleshoot" problems that aren't on my end. I don't want them neglecting UI bugs and basic functions in favor of adding fluff: I'm concerned that they...

I get that also but it's just displaying a progress bar; it's not actually doing anything else (watch syslog and the lights). Be sure to use the feedback function in the router to report all these. And leave reviews wherever you purchased it.

What do you think happens when one game downloads a multi-gigabyte update whilst playing another without QoS? Or Windows Update on the game port? Or someone gaming on the other game port? A multi-gigabyte download on a game port does what to your TV not on a game port? I find the port...

Bandwidth isn't the purpose of QoS: latency is. I don't want my real-time game data getting delayed, not even by milliseconds if I'm playing an FPS. I don't want my streaming video getting artifacts. I don't want my voice call getting static or drop-outs. I don't care how long my file transfer...

Maybe. Perhaps disabling QoS, reboot, and using RMerlin's suggestion above (tc qdisc show in SSH) to see if those ports are still prioritized. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to run QoS when you have multiple devices using this rather expensive router.

Use the feedback function on the router for Asus to see it. In the meantime, wouldn't using iptables work? (yes, a lot more difficult and prone to pilot error)

I see, two separate issues: WiFi schedule and QoS. Which QoS settings are you using? Type? Bandwidth? Mode? I'm using Adaptive/Auto/Custom and I don't get errors.
  19. Rolo

    ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 (Owners)

What do you mean, exactly, by "activate the QoS? What do you mean by "wifi programming will be deactivated"? After you upgraded, did you hard reset the router and manually reconfigure everything? I had constant errors before hard resetting it (power-cycling it didn't do enough).

Whoo! Neat. Looks like I have a lot of reading to do. Thank you very much! Output: https://pastebin.com/sZQ3Pj6W
