    pfSense/ OPNsense help

Some of the newer cards like the X710-T2L and newer 10Gbe switches are a bit more power efficient and run much cooler, my ~$400 Zyxel 10Gbe switch is pretty quiet it’s sitting in my parents office, not even in a closet. I have an older X550 card as well and it runs much hotter. I even recall...

    pfSense/ OPNsense help

I should have clarified. There’s minimum required firmware versions depending on the driver in use. When compiling newer drivers during the big issue I had to use a newer firmware, after that I had no reason to upgrade anymore. You can see what changes are in each firmware in the upgrade notes...

    pfSense/ OPNsense help

Download the firmware update or downgrade files from Intel’s site. Instructions are in there if you have issues let me know I’ll walk you through. I think 8.20 is the latest, not that I actually needed to upgrade, but that’s what I’m on. My card came with 7.2. No reason to upgrade/downgrade...

    pfSense/ OPNsense help

Yes it should work out of the box. I’m using one in pfsense. It had a bug a couple of years back after a faulty Intel driver was included in a FreeBSD update and it wouldn’t do N-BaseT only 1/10 Gbps modes worked. It was fixed by pfsense 2.5 if I recall, I was directed by people on the...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

Unless I’m mistaken Arista changed the IDS/IPS engine to Suricata. Distrowatch also shows the older 4.1 version of Suricata in the package list of the latest builds of Untangle. pf/OPN are both on 6.XX versions. As long as patching is up to date, unless you are losing any critics features it may...

    Alternative to pfsense/Opnsense

I could be wrong but I think 2.7 likely would release with 23.09. Here’s the tracker for CE/Plus https://redmine.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/issues?fixed_version_id=70&set_filter=1&sort=updated_on%3Adesc%2Cid%3Adesc&status_id=o

    Streaming Devices

I’ve never had issues with Chromecast or other devices only Roku especially with the WiFi remotes Here’s a decent explanation and how to disable, has to do with their “Interference mitigation“ feature...

    Streaming Devices

I used to use that to disable WifI drirect as the Rokus I had/tested (Was also a beta tester) a while back used to cause major interference, not sure if things have changed, granted it probably wasn't common issue, but I remember there were lots of posts on the net in regards to the issue. I...

Small Business Stack Cisco VS Ubiquiti

It's a US company @coxhaus. Their highest end Intel Xeon D1537/1541 (XG1537/1541) models for example are direct SuperMicro rebrands (one of the 5018D models if I recall), can get them for significantly cheaper. Some of the lower end models like the ARM units are more custom though. OpnSense...

    Alternative to pfsense/Opnsense

In regards to Community Edition I’ve heard the it’s dead or abandoned commentary from people since like 2.4…and 2.5 and 2.6 released…. I’m certain 2.7 will release, big changes so more time. Yeah I’m sure eventually pFsense Plus will completely replace CE. As others have said TNSR is no way a...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

I have nothing against Q9, I use Cloudflare as it’s faster for me, it does have alternate DNS servers with filters as well. I was not aware of the root server issue thanks for pointing that out. As for security/privacy I’ll just paste the firewalla team’s explanation, better than I can provide...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

You can use unbound in “forwarding mode” and have pfBlockerNG work. Unbound in “resolver mode” is slower for uncached queries, at least for me it was a noticeable difference, it will be faster once a lot of your regular queries are cached. I also use forwarding but with Cloudflare DNS with TLS...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

You could just use ntopng to monitor traffic flows to go alongside with pfblockerng, to keep it simple if it’s for home use. ntopng has layer7 functionality. Lot of traffic is encrypted anyway so it may not be worth the hassle for a full fledged IDS/IPS setup for home. If using Snort/Suricata...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

Glad things are working for you now. Probably don’t need pfblocker, with snort running though some do use both together as one blocks traffic based on origin/exit and the other based on heuristics from my understanding though there some overlap. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Let me...

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

Yeah PowerD is disabled on custom installs by default for compatibility sake, I turn it on as well. It’s enabled by default on Netgate hardware. Also make sure to disable the DNS override in general settings otherwise it will use the one from ISP. Also have you tried pfblocker and ntopng on it?

Some of these guys including Asus, use others to make/rebrand the PSUs, your Asus I believe is actually made by Seasonic. Your Corsair too ironically might have been a Seasonic unit. They sell under their own name as well. Not sure we can compare this with motherboards where Asus actually does...

First time I’ve seen you rant @RMerlin, don’t mind it though. Nice to see your overall perspective on the industry. As for power draw I think TechPowerUp or HotHardware don’t recall which did a test on Ryzen 7K and Intel 13th gen across various TDP profiles where they showed very little loss...

I guess I was thinking about this one. Atom C2000 also had an issue that required a hardware fix. https://www.anandtech.com/show/11110/semi-critical-intel-atom-c2000-flaw-discovered

True you have to buy re-inked cartridges which are pretty cheap but it’s a game with firmware updates blocking them - hence preventing updates. You have others like Epson that are like that too.
