How to troubleshoot intermittent, slow speeds over the internet?

Why don't you do a trace route? At least it will give you the path. Look for bottle necks.

Type of fiber adapter needed with this??

As far I know there are 2 types of fiber multi-mode and single mode and then you need to match up the fiber diameter and distance.

    Cloudflare ddns-start script

Why Cloudflare if it works in OpenDNS why not use it. I have no need for Cloudflare and I won't use it. I use QUAD9.

    Subnetting LAN isolation

You should be able to do that in a firewall. Allow home devices to initiate access to the NAS which will allow a return response but not allow the NAS to initiate a request. It is easy to do in an ACL. I am not sure how your firewall works.

Best Omada APs for Gigabit ethernet network and sub-gigabit WAN

Have you looked at the Cisco 150ax wireless APs? They run around $102 each for Wi-Fi 6. You don't need to buy a controller as it is built-in. It has a GUI setup. It needs to be a large apartment or concrete walls.

    Nominal WiFi Speeds

So are you using separate channels for 5 Ghz on your APs as they do not have much range going through walls especially outside walls. Neighbors should not be much of a problem on 5 Ghz.

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

Yes, my wife went on a trip with her best friend so I had plenty of time to test but it turns out I did not need it. I was up and running in under 10 minutes. It was probably faster but I forgot I had to log in again as it kept telling me it was not ready so I waited. I tried my monitor but...

    Nominal WiFi Speeds

You might try using different channels on your APs. Since you have 5 you will need to space them with appropriate power levels. This will give you more active talkers, not so much a single user but overall, a better system.

Yet another question about VLAN w/ RT-AX88U Pro in AP mode.

It looks like a basic setup. What layer3 switch are you using?

    What to do?

I ran that set up back in the beginning of wireless using Tomato. It works well. It is very slow nowadays. I still think I have 1 of my old Linksys routers up in storage from long ago.

Question about Asus Merlin Router behind a firewalla?

Firewalla I would think would fit with consumer gear and may be easy to use. Firewalla seems to be a layer 2 device but it does not do real networking with a layer 3 switch which I would want. Firewalla seems like an easy to maintain firewall for non-networkers. I have not seen anything on...

Is now the time to go to 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps home networking?

I am a layer 3 switch fan boy so it will be a Cisco switch for me. And I am not sold on 2.5Gbe. I don't see it really helping me. If they could get the heat down on 10Gbe then I am in. Until then I think 1GBe for a client and 10Gbe for the backbone. Cisco does sale 2.5Gbe and 10Gbe layer 3...

Disadvantages of Access Points vs, AiMesh

That is crap. Please explain yourself. In a real network you can have better than a guest network. So many different ways.

    TP-Link Archer High Vulnerability

I think you are wrong there. Cisco constantly tests and patches bugs they find that have not been in the wild yet.
  15. C

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

Yes, but there was a bug so I switched to DNS Forwarding which was patched in version 24.03. So now I switched back. https://forum.netgate.com/topic/186145/unbound-cve-2023-50387-and-cve-2023-50868

    Creating an ethernet guest network

But then you have to deal with multiple firewalls.

Using pfSense with a L3 core switch

Now that I have upgraded and everything seems to be working. I switched today from DNS forwarding to DNS resolver.

GL.iNet worth a try? Any advantage over ASUS?

Using a firewall for blocking is "the normal way" to control access to the internet.
  19. C

    Mesh Vs. AP

I guess it was one of those nights.
  20. C

    Creating an ethernet guest network

It should be as simple as creating a VLAN and adjusting the firewall rules for access since you are 1 device.
