Ars: Internet routers running Tomato are under attack by notorious crime gang

ars is a terrible news site. Basically so much fear mongering and hype. Everyday EVERY DEVICE is being scanned for default credentials, not just 1 particular type. Using default credentials is something that happens to EVERY DEVICE, there is no DEVICE SPECIFIC VULNERABILITY/EXPLOIT mentioned in...

looking for real world experince(comparison) with RAX120 and asus gt_ax11000

the best way to deal with bufferbloat is, get an enterprise grade router and enjoy the extremely complicated QoS options you can employ, worked for me. I would pick asus over netgear, after not being happy with their modem. Out of all 3 modems i tested, netgear was the slowest and least...

    [HP] HP Laptop - 15t(10th Gen i7)

HP and lenovo, higher priced for options, but have bad hardware quality. Even thinkpad quality has dropped too. HP has always been for many many years one of the crappiest laptop quality brands you could buy. They may have made decent switches and servers should proprietary and vendor lock in...

Please help me choose between WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra and a Synology 218J

WD works fine, is ok as a basic NAS. infact when i have money i'll order one for my parents. I would recommend synology though and if when i purchase it they have a better offer i would use them instead. Synology is a pretty good NAS brand, the only problem i have with them is their price.

Need help/advice fix old router get new one?

You can switch to completed QoS methods, like for me combining a few different types such as sfq and a few others and create some complex priority + limit with bursts and so on for different things. The router i use however is complicated and the pros have scripts that auto generate rules...

Regarding tp link SMB or semi managed switches

the problem here is the lack of talent. Plugging in my USB-C device brought the network down that consisted of dump switches and a prosumer d-link router, but at home i use mikrotik and its totally fine but when i suggest mikrotik the local admin was like nope because he couldnt figure out how...

Ethernet, full copper vs copper clad aluminium

I have used FS.com before for copper 10G SFP+ direct, and can confirm that they work and they are able to flash it for compatibility for your device. Just remember you will need copper for POE as anything electrical copper is the best all rounder (there are better cables but not physically...

    Best Router for Smarthome/Sonos/homekit

there isnt really a best router for smart home. smart home, iot and such are all gimmicks. To a wifi network, 10 sensors = 10 wifi clients. If they all sync at 1Mb/s, than they're disturbing other clients, if they sync at the full possible link speed, than they can talk at 1Mb/s all they like...

IPv6 issues with D-Link 1510 series managed switch

for a lot less you could've gotten mikrotik or ubiquiti and even more features for 10G ethernet or SFP+ Dlink should be avoided always. When their dumb switches needed reboots, definitely doing something wrong. I could say the same about netgear though when their nice modem requires a reboot...

Ethernet, full copper vs copper clad aluminium

depends on your region, i dont have that information on hand but some here on the forum know well. Check among the top 20 posters here.

Ethernet, full copper vs copper clad aluminium

nope, the resistance is simply too high. You'll need full copper and a decent lower awg for the conductor. The voltage drop on a CCA will be greater than full copper too. For all POE runs i always suggest full copper because of the voltage drop and make sure it has good awg. cat5e will do...

Can switch be connected to the router WAN port?

Also depending on your WAN, your router will need to be fast enough and link speed too. If you are just receiving, you will need 2x the bandwidth in 1 direction (sending+ receiving) otherwise you can just apply filters (switches/routers some can use filters for this). Its 1 reason i love my CCR...

Another new member looking for buying advice

sure you could run rmerlin on the ac88u, i do that and it fixes some issues on the original firmware. However i also have other hacks to deal with overheating issues. On my asus 68U, i have a cheap desktop case fan that uses USB connected to it, really keeps it cool. For longetivity you'll want...

    POE+ switch recommendations

i managed to grab ahold of a much older gigabit cisco POE switch, though you would have to master the older cisco CLI to configure it, though i got it for the equivalent of $50. If i remember its a 48 port switch with 4 SFP ports and POE.
