Question [Block Box - Hand Crafted Router]

there is no such thing as a full stack developer, its what we call ourselves to employers/managers who are idiots and know nothing about software developers, true fact btw because in software development, you want a focused team not someone whos all over the place. You can post it in tech...

    Mikrotik RB4011 question. VLAN config

in mikrotik routerOS, things like bridges and vlans and other virtual interfaces that run ontop of physical interfaces take precedence, that means that using the physical interface in your rules are either invalid or only apply to that interface. In a way its more of a raw way of looking at...

After school Program, do we need a mesh system?

in terms of meshing and APs, thats a different case. The most important factor to look at here is airspace. So if 2.4Ghz airspace is 30% practical, and you have a clear airspace to have 3 APs and you need the bandwidth, then do you need to load balance if there are routers that have multiple...

Facebook do it again, change your passwords.

but passwords were not leaked. If your account was private, then all you have to do is change your real name and phone number, because its quite easy to find people if you know just a little about them

    10GbE network under $1,100?

wow you looked at ubiquiti but not mikrotik i feel hurt you would miss a great brand and go for a shady brand. The mikrotik CCR1036 with 2SFP+ which is the one i have will handle its port in NAT without using hardware acceleration and still have CPU power to spare. However you will need to get...

    Mikrotik RB4011 question. VLAN config

vlan is an interface, so you run your rules and treat the vlan interface like a regular ethernet interface. That means you do not run your rules and config on the ethernet interface but rather the vlan interface when you are using vlans. As for inter routing, simply add a route from LAN A to...

When should we consider wifi 6 devices?

just because wifi 6 comes out soon doesnt mean you should rush out and buy wifi 6. It makes no sense if you only have 1 device that uses it on the network or if wifi AC's practical bandwidth exceeds your internet speeds for your home usage. However i am pretty impressed with some routers given...

Regarding tp link SMB or semi managed switches

that makes it bad if that line is unreliable, looks like i'll have to find an alternative, or perhaps stick with mikrotik on a budget.

Use edgerouter to power up a server over LAN ???

First if the edgerouter reboots when there is power you can script through there, otherwise what you do is set them to sleep when the battery is low rather than depleted. WOL does work from shut off but it depends on the NIC as well. So test it out, shutdown the edgerouter, pull out the plug...

    Edgerouter 12 vs Mikrotik RB4011

Well if you have CCNP you will definitely appreciate mikrotik, and unlike cisco mikrotik's strength in config is in its GUI, which is not user friendly to the untrained user. Im not sure about fortigate as i've not had a chance to try them but they are usually known for their firewalls. I do...

Regarding tp link SMB or semi managed switches

thanks, yes i've been reading user experiences about tplink switches, the problem is most of them related to their entry level line, have you tried their business line? For other devices they do better. Their wireless NIC does far better than dlink's and works decently.

    Edgerouter 12 vs Mikrotik RB4011

as a router hands on i would suggest mikrotik over ubiquiti simply because ubiquiti sucks in comparison to mikrotik, but i wouldnt recommend mikrotik in other areas because they arent as easy to configure for other things but can be really awesome if you do such as for wifi. I recently got one...

Regarding tp link SMB or semi managed switches

Recently was found that despite cisco managing to get all the compliance, there were major flaws with their security. However the backdoors are mandatory so if you are in a country under 5 eyes you can use cisco/netgear, but not if you are outside. These backdoors have been mandatory for many...

    Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite Revisited

Cool, looks like they must've updated the pricing to reflect the specs.

    Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite Revisited

you should've gotten the RB40xx series since they are quad core ARM A15s instead instead of the dual cores on the 30xx series, and are priced pretty well. They now have 8 port with SFP+ and the same with 4 channel MUMIMO Wifi AC plus.

Cisco Small Buisness Switches and IP Phones

if you're looking at managing VOIP traffic, plenty of routers and switches do them. For router its pretty simple to add if its not predefined, for switches plenty of them include VOIP for detection to prioritise or apply vlan especially small managed business switches.

Cisco Small Buisness Switches and IP Phones

Routers and switches dont do VOIP, they can detect it and modems can. However for some you can install it like on a regular linux box. All the switches and routers can do is detect VOIP and reroute/prioritise them accordingly to how you set, including securing it against unauthorised VOIP usage.

Regarding tp link SMB or semi managed switches

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/cisco-backdoor-hardcoded-accounts-software,37480.html anything that runs cisco IOS, that would include their SMB line too as i remember you mentioning that they do run cisco IOS. The problem isnt isolated to just cisco, even netgear's prosafe line isnt safe...

    10GbE Options

If you asked me, i honestly do not care whether or not you need something but rather if you want something and have the budget without ruining someone elses lives, like if you wanted 100Gb/s or scalable high bandwidth blade servers for routing like used in T1 internet exchanges that can do layer...

Regarding tp link SMB or semi managed switches

I have a few questions from those that currently use or have used tp link semi managed or business switches. How reliable are they (in the timespan of a year have you had to reboot them because of a hang?) how featureful are they and how well do these features work (older netgear prosafe...
