Wi-Fi 6 Performance Roundup: Five Routers Tested

@thiggins I was just re-reading the articles and may have missed whether or not MU-MIMO and/or Implicit Beamforming was enabled on the test routers. The RvR drop-off then stabilization with increased attenuation on the 5 Ghz band with the Broadcom devices is puzzling, and I'm wondering if the...

RAX80 speed tests with an AX/AC clients and some interesting findings

For those interested, here’s the screen recording showing the widely variable speed during tests while my iPhone 11 Pro Max is connected to my RAX80 in 802.11n mode. All other modes (ac & ax) quickly jump to max speeds and stay there for the duration of the test. It appears to be an issue with...

RAX80 speed tests with an AX/AC clients and some interesting findings

I used the Speedtest app. Here’s some of the results that made it to the chart. Thanks for the links to your testing - will check it out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

RAX80 speed tests with an AX/AC clients and some interesting findings

Ah yes. While testing 2.4 GHz (20 MHz channel), my old router must’ve been 802.11n, and on my Pixel 3 it must be using 802.11n as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

^^ Unfortunately I don’t believe we can access that list, nor change the order in the Apple environment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

^^ It’s an uncanny coincidence. The M network’s MAC ends in :cf - which I believe comes after the N network’s :c8 in the hexadecimal numbering sequence. So I’m left to wondering why it selects one SSID/MAC over another with signal and band being equal. Maybe Steve Jobs knows - so we’ll never...

RAX80 speed tests with an AX/AC clients and some interesting findings

Early this morning I did some speed tests with my Netgear RAX80 (FW 1.0.1.70_), iPhone 11 Pro Max (AX client), and Pixel 3 (AC client). I chose early morning to help minimize interference and noise from nearby network traffic particularly on the 2.4 Ghz network - however both should be minimal...

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

When trying to get my iPhone to choose one SSID over another, I may have discovered the trick. I've got two 5Ghz SSIDs - one starting with M, the other starts with N. Whenever I get home after leaving the house, it always connects to the M SSID. Therefore it seems with all other things being...

Does OFDMA Really Work? Part 1

Surprise: 1.0.3.88 was released today for the RAX80. "Supports OFDMA for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately". However with everything working for the most part with 1.0.1.70 I think I'll wait a few weeks for others to test it before I upgrade.

Does OFDMA Really Work? Part 1

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I just looked at the Netgear website and the RAX80's bullet points include "Uplink and downlink OFDMA". It seems the Marketing Department is way ahead of the R&D Department. Hopefully that new firmware will also include WPA3 support - or something else useful...

Does OFDMA Really Work? Part 1

On my RAX80, the checkbox only appears above the 2.4 Ghz Basic Wireless settings, and again in Advanced Wireless settings. It's enabled by default - so I will UNcheck the box, do some testing, and report back...

Does OFDMA Really Work? Part 1

“Enable AX - This WiFi mode will enable AX features such as OFDMA” This sure could be interpreted that support already exists. Since not, perhaps Netgear should add the word “upcoming“. I’d be curious exactly what the GUI says on their officially supported RAX products, and why the RAX80...

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

Interesting, but makes sense to lessen co-channel interference. I'm tired of seeing my neighbor's routers polluting the airwaves using 80 and 160 Mhz wide channels when I know their internet speed is only ~100 Mbps, and I doubt they're frequently transferring large files across their wireless...

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

I would guess 6E propagation wouldn't be much different than 6 considering the new channels start only ~100 Mhz above the current top frequency of 5.8 Ghz. Fortunately the latest iPhones support the roaming standards: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202628 I did another test today where I...

Does OFDMA Really Work? Part 1

My Netgear RAX80 appears to support OFDMA when "Enable AX" is checked - see screenshot of advanced wireless settings.

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

My goal was to be able to connect our phones to a single or multiple SSIDs then forget about it - as my wife just wants everything to work everywhere on our property without fiddling with settings. I think this is the key point. If on a Wi-Fi Call, the call will likely drop with my current one...

Seamless roaming from 5 to 2.4 Ghz using one AP - same or different SSID?

I just finished reading the very informative "Wi-Fi Roaming Secrets Revealed" series, and Apple's "About wireless roaming for enterprise", but neither answered my question specifically - or they're just a bit over my head. My setup is a Netgear RAX80 router and several iPhone 11 clients...

WiFi 6 was not worth it for me ~ Journey of WiFi 6 AiMesh back to WiFi 5 UniFi ~

One thing I didn’t notice mentioned here was with WiFi 6 you also get WPA3 security - except for the RAX80 and a few other routers for some odd reason. Yeah I know you need clients that support it too, but at least your router will be ready as you introduce updated clients. Sent from my...

WiFi 6 was not worth it for me ~ Journey of WiFi 6 AiMesh back to WiFi 5 UniFi ~

Interesting research- thanks for taking the time to post it. I recently upgraded from a Netgear R7000 to RAX80. In our 2400 sq ft 1990s era wood construction home, the AP is upstairs on one end of the house while the family room, kitchen and small backyard is on the lower level on the opposite...
