Best-practices for replacing ASUS RT-AX86U with ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (=moving everything from the existing router to a replacement one)?

Migration is PITA, and either way you do it will be PITA and somewhat time consuming. Same with resetting the router. You may want to opt for more fidelity, meaning preserving your stuff as it was at the expense of time. If you are running Entware, set up backupmon addon, and run it on your...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Yeah, I looked at that a bit - at first I did not reboot for a while, and had to manually reset it from time to time when it became unresponsive. One of the issues is max pid - [echo 4194304 > /proc/sys/kernel/pid_max] The other issue is the the dcd translation faults, due to parental control...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Oh, it's been more than that! :) But on and off - and I learnt a few things along the way too. I prefer to auto-reboot the router daily - few people do that. It solves some issues, but creates others. The stock solution is to fully power off the device - but I don't like that one. If not...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Update: I have added a couple of sleep commands, and things seem good now. No more error messages. I feel it's important to give a few seconds after Entware creates the links and before rc.unslung script kicks in. It seems there is a prior dnsmasq restart in progress, that completes upon...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.14 is now available for AC models

I mean - let's not pretend like Asus was really big on testing everything thoroughly anyway. Lots of issues there that persisted for years. But yeah - since 386.14 did not fix any of the critical bugs - technically there is not a big reason to update. The current 386.14 had the unpleasant...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Alright - this rabbit hole goes very deep ... I watched things over the week - and warm reboots are a mess, things seem to be launched in weird order or when they should not be. For cold reboots the boot sequence seems as expected. Having said that about warm reboots, I've been warm rebooting...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Yep, agreed! My impression now is that a lot of things simply pause and wait for /opt Entware stuff to be mounted. Then they hit with vengeance, including scribe, right after the mount occurs. It looks there are about 90 seconds between boot and Entware mount, so anything that was waiting will...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

But this message is from within the dnsmasq.postconf script! See this line in my dnsmasq.postconf : logger -t post-conf.div "Before" And it's somehow not executed ... Can you check your logs, and see when dnsmasq is launched relative to this message: "kernel: Booting Linux on physical". It'd...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

My sleeps are mild, no more that 15 seconds total. I did read about the timeout thing. Anyway, to summarize. There is a very early call to /jffs/scripts/dnsmasq.postconf, which happens way before Entware is mounted. dnsmasq.postconf calls ". /opt/share/diversion/file/post-conf.div" without any...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

I measure time by time stamps. I found something interesting today :) As in that chinese saying about interesting times. So I observed yesterday that the early /jffs/scripts/dnsmasq.postconf invocation at 04:05:09 was not printing After: Oct 3 04:05:09 post-conf.div: Before Oct 3 04:06:53...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

During the auto-reboot today /jffs/addons/amtm/mount-entware.mod just died in the middle of one of the sleep commands I inserted, LOL. So far every warm reboot appears to proceed differently, judging by the log file. Anyway, your script generally says this from the command line...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

    I guess I add it after all the other stuff? Like this: admin@RT-AC86U-9988:/jffs/scripts# more dnsmasq.postconf #!/bin/sh sh /jffs/addons/unbound/unbound.postconf "$1" # unbound_manager /jffs/scripts/uiDivStats dnsmasq & # uiDivStats . /opt/share/diversion/file/post-conf.div # Added...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

I know factory resets are recommended - but often the same issues do come back :( I think I'll just go with something like this in /jffs/addons/amtm/mount-entware.mod (sleep 15 && service restart_dnsmasq) & This should let dnsmasq issues resolve themselves.

dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket for 192.168.1.1: Address already in use

Yep, correct. Let me monitor this and will report back on how it goes. Also, it seems that once Entware drive is mounted, any dnsmasq restart will launch Diversion too since it'll have the working path in the dnsmasq config file for it. This appears to be similar to that 'cru' issue where jobs...

dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket for 192.168.1.1: Address already in use

Thanks! It appears now that several things call for "service restart_dnsmasq", and that may end up clashing during boot if it happens simultaneously. Subtle differences in boot sequence cause a few things try to trigger dnsmasq restart, and when that happens simultaneously, problems emerge...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

@thelonelycoder Not clear what is nonsense here, a few sleep spacers should not adversely impact the execution of a script, and may help with debugging ... It does appear that Diversion is started outside of /jffs/addons/amtm/mount-entware.mod. Today my reboot got through all Sleep messages...

VPNMON VPNMON-R3 v1.3.7 -Oct 20, 2024- Monitor WAN/Dual-WAN/OpenVPN Health & Reset Multiple OpenVPN Connections (Now available in AMTM!)

Sorry, I got too excited with the new useful addition to my router! :D It solved an important issue for me, so I thought I'd feedback some fresh eye perspective. Of course, it does all I need already - so happy how it is! Thanks again for developing in!

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Interesting ... So the script that links Entware directory (and diversion location!) is /jffs/addons/amtm/mount-entware.mod, but diversion is actually started elsewhere! I now think that this "service restart_dnsmasq" command in mount-entware.mod was messing up the diversion setting itself up...

Entware Where is Entware started upon reboot?

Alright, I was chasing the mysterious error I was getting from dnsmasq - link. And it took me down this rabbit hole below. I've taken this out of the post in the Diversion thread, for better visibility. The story is below. But the key question is where are different Entware related things are...
