Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

Indeed, and thanks! I was using a Diversion feature incompatible with the new dnsmasq 2.90. Upgraded Diversion to v5.1.1, and then upgraded AC86U to 12_6. Everything appears to be working now (knock on wood).

    Correctly using VPN Director?

Yes, the default killswitch barely works, and that device may end up being un-VPNed quite easily, and connected to the network! So you actually need this one: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/killmon-v1-1-2-feb-29-2024-ip4-ip6-vpn-kill-switch-monitor-configurator-now-available-in-amtm.81758/...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

Tried a couple more dirty upgrades. Same issues, DHCP is not running. Even upgraded Diversion to 5.1 in between, no help. Something about this: failed to create listening socket for 192.168.1.1: Address already in use Here are the relevant messages: Mar 1 10:52:21 RT-AC86U-9988...

    Router temperatures - 2023

Updated the pictures of my cooling setup in post #1: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/router-temperatures-2023.86949/#post-866606 Router temps are still around 50-58C depending on the load: Feb 29 18:15:00 RT-AC86U-9988 Temp: 52.3 40.0 49.0 ; Mem free: 33788 KB; Swap used: 30556 KB; sda1...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

Can anyone post this output with a working dirty upgrade to 12_6? nvram show |grep dhcp |grep -v custom |grep -v static Here is my output, I wonder if there is something different about nvram variables that impact the updated dnsmasq. dhcp1_enable_x=0 dhcp1_end=192.168.2.254 dhcp1_lease=86400...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

So I had the log for 12_6, and then the log for the downgraded 12_4. I stripped the leading time stamps, and diff'ed the 2. It looks like (a) DHCP is in fact run by dnsmasq (which is what's being updated in this version), and (b) 12_6 does not seem to offer IP addresses as version 12_4 does. I...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

Quick report. Attempted dirty upgrade on AC86u, on top of 12_4. After the upgrade to 12_6, my key laptop stopped getting DHCP address, both WiFi and plugged in (!!!). Just could not connect to the router at all. Somehow a Fire tablet did connect to the router fine. So I was able to download...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.12_6 is now available for AC models

Did you try this fix: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/fyi-am-386-12-on-ac86u-how-to-decrease-of-random-reboots.88733/ For me, this reduced the issues with the router by an order of magnitude or more !

FYI: AM 386.12 on AC86u - how to decrease # of random reboots

It's been a few weeks since I implemented pid_max increase. With daily reboots, I only observed stuck nvram commands right after nightly reboots, about once every 10 days. Otherwise nothing seems to get stuck during the normal router operation. StuckProcCmds_00007_2328773.TRC.txt:2024-02-09...

Cheapest device to run VPN server

If run calculations, you actually want the lowest power device - it'll cost a fortune over its lifetime in electricity! So buy something that does not pull much juice.

    Crontab jobs disappeared.

Can try this on Friday! Will see if the router is stable tomorrow after turning off the monitoring script. Any possible adverse effects from cru alternatives?
  12. B

    Crontab jobs disappeared.

Weird results. After I managed to stabilize AC86u to avoid crash rebooting, with this script it did it 3 times today (!) Post one of the crashes, all cron jobs came back (27), then disappeared after another one, and got back to (22) only. The scheduled reboot in the morning at 4:05 got 20 jobs...

Scribe /usr/bin/logger messages don't make it to the log file - intermittent issue

Quick update. After setting the cron reboot command to the following, the issue has gone away. Now the output appears to always be there: cru a ScheduledReboot "5 4 * * * /sbin/service 'reboot'"
  14. B

    Crontab jobs disappeared.

Yes indeed! On some days the cron job from services-start never gets scheduled in the first place, and does not show up in "cru l". Or maybe it disappears before I have a chance to see it in the morning! On the bright side the other issue below has gone away after I scheduled reboots using [cru...

    Crontab jobs disappeared.

OK, a data point here. Could be not very helpful but anyways. I scheduled backupmon in 2 places, in post-mount, and services-start. First goes at 4:28, second at 14:46. The router reboots itself daily at 4:05. By the backup file time I can see if the 2nd job fired off. It seems to have about 50%...

FYI: AM 386.12 on AC86u - how to decrease # of random reboots

Yep, I'd turn off AiP stuff, but cannot - it's needed in the household for now. Lesser evil - otherwise I'd have to replicate similar functionality with more hassle for me :( Proprietary code blobs are really poison since their bugs live forever - but sadly this is as good as it gets with Asus...

FYI: AM 386.12 on AC86u - how to decrease # of random reboots

I was trying to fix random reboots on my AC86U with AM 386.12_4 that is running AiProtection and other proprietary features. Even daily auto-reboots would not help - the router could crash-reboot even after an hour or two in operation. Also, lots of issues like this were discussed in the...

Soft Reboot (fail) vs Hard Reboot

Yeah, I am thinking the same - sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don't :) The issue is that Merlin software is uncovering issues that Asus is not always willing to fix because they barely occur with stock firmware. Thus chasing upgrades my be counterproductive. AC86U was...

Soft Reboot (fail) vs Hard Reboot

Well, a few issues were discovered after AC86u went out of favor with Asus. It's possible that the AX branch got updates, and those fixes are in 388 branch. Lots of AX routers look like AC86u cpu-wise, but with different radio chips. The wired network switch is the cpu itself, so those are the...

Soft Reboot (fail) vs Hard Reboot

Or - some brave sole would port 388 to RT-AC86U ! The cpu is the same, a few tweaks to the radio modules, and the router is as good as new again :D
