Asuswrt-Merlin is now 10 years old!

Thank you for starting this project @RMerlin. I find Asuswrt (and *-Merlin) much easier to use than OpenWRT which I discovered for my old cheap Tp link router, also 10-11 years ago. Much less stressful to setup over the years, so your work hasn't been for nothing. ♥

Upgrading from my trusty old RT-AC66U to the new RT-AX86U today. What can I transfer from the old router to the new one?

... Thaaat would explain why the 5 GHz wifi always has taken forever to start after a reboot on my old router. So many years of frustration not understanding why it was so slow.

Do I need to make ddns-start file executable for it to work?

    /jffs/scripts/ddns-start

Upgrading from my trusty old RT-AC66U to the new RT-AX86U today. What can I transfer from the old router to the new one?

I've setup most things yesterday from screenshots of the old Web GUI control panel. I haven't gotten DDNS to work yet (DuckDNS) Does /jffs/scripts/ddns-start have to be chmod +x'd to work or something? Once DDNS works I'll be able to get VPN server setup and then format the entware USB drive...

Upgrading from my trusty old RT-AC66U to the new RT-AX86U today. What can I transfer from the old router to the new one?

I'd like to transfer as much as possible of my working config to the new router (once I've installed Merlin on it) so I don't have to manually configure every tedious setting from scratch if possible. I have the following settings to transfer: Custom IP range/subnet USB hard drive File share...

    Running Syncthing without admin user!

AsusWRT itself and any derivatives is only built to work with one root account, although you can rename 'admin' to whatever you desire in the Web GUI. I'd just create a good password, keep the firmware software updated and most importantly, close any unnecessary open ports and services to the...

SMB over VPN on fiber internet super slow.

Did SMB3 require any additional configuration after installing it through the package manager? This router doesn't have entware installed yet.

SMB over VPN on fiber internet super slow.

A family members' RT-AC86U with Merlin firmware 386.1_2 doesn't provide good speeds when transferring files from his network shared hard drives (plugged into the router via USB). I set the entire router and home "cloud" up for them. LAN speeds are fine, internet speed is 600 Mbit down/50 Mbit...

RT-AC66U users in 2021, which firmware do you recommend others using?

Thank you. That's more than enough reason to disable the web GUI on WAN. Fixing that now.

RT-AC66U users in 2021, which firmware do you recommend others using?

HTTPS only, I generated a new certificate, and I use good password measures, different passwords and usernames for each service like VPN, SSH etc. But I'll ask you naively like this then for arguments sake: "What's the harm?"

    Release [Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374 LTS release 49E4

Ah.. So much for that wireguard-go idea I had then. Yes, It's a AC66U.

RT-AC66U users in 2021, which firmware do you recommend others using?

Thank you all for your time and energy. I will stick with Merlin's last build for now until I've done enough research on the John fork. I've disabled any ports/services to the WAN interface that could be a risk, or changed ports for the critical services I'd like to use, like VPN and remote...

    Release [Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374 LTS release 49E4

@john9527 Pardon me for asking, which Linux kernel version is the latest release built on? I couldn't find any info in the changelogs or readme's in the download folder on one drive.

RT-AC66U users in 2021, which firmware do you recommend others using?

Care to elaborate on Fresh Tomato for a newcomer of that firmware family? I've used OpenWRT in the past but have fallen in love with the Streamlined experience of Asuswrt-Merlin. It's a lot easier to recover from any disastrous misconfiguration and alot simpler to understand than dealing with...

RT-AC66U users in 2021, which firmware do you recommend others using?

I got back my good old RT-AC66U again after a relative got to use it for a few years and I want to hear which firmware the rest of you use today. I am aware of the dropped support for Asuswrt-Merlin, which ended on 380.70 I believe, but it's feature rich despite being a security risk. There's...

Extremely slow VPN Server transfer speeds even on AES-NI supported RT-AC86U. Out of ideas, please help.

Well, I did some further testing from a windows laptop from another, external 100/100 Mbit network against my own 300/10 Mbit home internet, and I saw some improvements when using a windows laptop as a PPTP client (less encryption work for the cpu to work with in theory, and on the 'send files...

Extremely slow VPN Server transfer speeds even on AES-NI supported RT-AC86U. Out of ideas, please help.

I read about wireguard on their website just now and the technology sounds amazing, with minimal attack vectors and it's goal to be simple to use and all that stuff. But it's not yet consumer-ready from what I can see, which is probably why neither Asus stock firmware or Merlin firmware has it...

Extremely slow VPN Server transfer speeds even on AES-NI supported RT-AC86U. Out of ideas, please help.

I don't know how comfortable I would be with trying Wireguard if it's all CLI based. Too many things that could go wrong with my knowledge. I could look into trying to host a VPN server on a PC or (maybe a NAS?) to let my devices into the network. Are there any easy ways to get that up and...

Extremely slow VPN Server transfer speeds even on AES-NI supported RT-AC86U. Out of ideas, please help.

Sorry Xentrk. I forgot my manners. Well, everything is possible, but I thought I'd ask for help at this point as I've reached the extent of my own knowledge on the matter. Is Wireguard Web GUI 'setupable' or is that a part of CLI territory?
