Small Eco Friendly Powerful Quiet Linux Box Recommendations

Interested to see recommendations here. When I was trying to get something for this setup a while back, silent typically meant passive cooling which wasn't compatible with small. And airflow for cooling with small devices meant loud fans. Have you got any asks of the GPU in this? Plex...

Winter energy challenges - UPS for home use?

It tends to run at between 70 and 80 watts although obviously can spike higher. A fair amount of it's setup (or at least tinkering over the years) has been specifically around reduced power usage - more down to that meaning reduced heat which in turns reduces the need for noisey fans given the...

Winter energy challenges - UPS for home use?

Well that's a first - growing up pretty much able to see the Isle of Wight, being up North is something I've never been accused of before! Not knowing what proper up North is - that's a different question ;). @OzarkEdge Thanks for the suggestions - I've seen a few good reviews about CyberPower...

Winter energy challenges - UPS for home use?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. @L&LD Has hit the nail on the head with the reason for my question. For me, this is about preventing a foreseeable/reasonable chance cost - whether that be $$$ or time. (Or likely both in this case.) I'm not really bothered about everything running for 20...

Winter energy challenges - UPS for home use?

Deviating a bit from the educational and entertaining thread on turning kit off regularly to save power, I was wondering on another risk with the potential power challenges ahead we have in Europe this winter. I'm not familiar with plans across the continent but certainly here in the UK there...

    RJ45-inline coupler Recommendation

Amazon appears out of stock (here at least) but have used UGreen Rj45 couplers that consistently meet the speed levels you suggest (high hundreds mbps). Depends on setup and whether you'd get extra use from it but I'd argue that using a switch would be overkill. (More reliable quality given...

WOL(WakeOnLan) when local network traffic detected

What devices, more to the point OSs, are you connecting to those servers from? You can configure autofs on Linux in such a way that it fires the WOL packet and waits for the NAS to wake up on accessing a share on the NAS.

Two https domain two devices same external IP

It is but you'll need to setup a proxy between - something like nginx. Route everything to that with port forwarding then nginx splits and routes from there with the two DNS entries being defined as separate servers in its config. Edit: Haven't tried it but https://github.com/pedrom34/TutoAsus...

    Test NASDrive

Did you mount the HDD (as you worded it) or the md device the drive becomes part of? (/dev/md1 for example) In addition to the mdadm scan command @Tech Junky mentions, can you see the array picked up and used the USB drive if you cat /proc/mdstat?

    “New” ASUS 2022 Features

I don't disagree with automated upgrades entirely although some of your examples are controlled push as part of a managed service (ISPs doing modem upgrades in a phased manner to control the risk) rather than blind automated pull as Asus updates would be. (Assuming RMerlin doesn't fancy shifting...

    “New” ASUS 2022 Features

Personally I can't think of anything worse than automated firmware upgrades! Notifications of upgrades available (even regular reminders) yes but not installation. Firmware upgrade is a very intrusive activity and while RMerlin does a fantastic job providing enhanced network stability, the...

4 bay NAS for home usage

I hear you on free time and patience - my setup was in place pre wife and kids! I suspect that starting from scratch today I'd go down the off the shelf route and thoughts of things avoiding vendor lock-in would be way down the list! One thought on the RAID mechanism you use... I'm not sure on...

4 bay NAS for home usage

This, to me anyway, says an off the shelf NAS would probably better suit you. I think the DIY approach can be great (I've been running a DIY home NAS for a long time now) but it's not for everyone and I'd say that unless (a) you have a specific requirement and (b) you're comfortable with the...

4 bay NAS for home usage

The router might have a 2.5GbE port but do you need that throughput bandwidth? Unless you plan 4k streaming to multiple devices over wire connections and are sure the NAS can serve content that quickly (think higher number of disks for parallel reads along with impact of extra disks on your...

CRON Job help - Activate CRON job if a device is present

The backup scenario makes sense on the WOL packet. Interesting setup with the smbsync2 app - there are many that don't trust Google or Facebook to handle their backups! :) (Ignoring for a minute Facebook isn't a backup because of the way it drops photo quality/sizing...) The only thing I would...

CRON Job help - Activate CRON job if a device is present

Why the preference for ping? Is your phone set to have an allocated IP or left on normal DHCP? If you haven't given it a reserved IP then it'll have a random IP from the pool when you come back - at least if you've been away for a few days. Assuming no funny business on the phone with it...

CRON Job help - Activate CRON job if a device is present

I haven't tried running it but something like this might do it (assuming you're not interested in what's on teh guest wifi) #!/bin/sh # | seperated list of MACS that count as "I'm home" AT_HOME_MACS="yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy|zz:zz:zz:zz:zz:zz" SEND_WOL="no" for WLAN_IF in $(nvram get wl_ifnames) do...

News Trend Micro: Cyclops Blink Sets Sights on Asus Routers

That doesn't do away with the hardware intervention approach entirely surely? Would mean a harder implementation (ie big architectural change on next gen of routers) but separating out critical (requiring button press to allow new firmware) and non-critical between two separate chips and...

Thanks for the feedback - it would certain make a mockery of paying for a 500meg or gig FTTP connection!
