    My NAS is Failing

Given WDs recent antics marking drives as "old" and untrustworthy just on the 3 year mark (i.e. the day the warranty expires) causing all sorts of problems with the hosting NAS, I wouldn't be recommending them. There have been a few different discussions on the forum over the last few months...

    Lease Time

Couple of questions... If you look at /var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.leases what does it show for remaining lease times (as far as dnsmasq is concerned - ignoring what the clients are doing). Second (just to double check) - are you using a recent version of YazFi? I don't think it will matter as you...

ASUS urges customers to patch critical router vulnerabilities

Lawyers was my thought too - especially if there happened to be an honest technical person in the room that happens to mention a hypothetical scenario that's is technically possible. Lawyers thought process will be "I don't understand that but let's add it to the disclaimer so we can't be...

ASUS urges customers to patch critical router vulnerabilities

Not quite true - one of the listed CVEs specifically refers to versions prior to Asus Merlin 386.7 so that one is covered. I am curious about the other though. Does netatalk not exist in the 386 build or is this another sign of the creep towards the remaining AC models being EOLd?

    Commercial or DIY NAS

Depends a bit on your setup - in my case I'm running a DIY NAS: ext4 on LVM on RAID5. (A bit of extra complexity but can be helpful if you want to swap the disks out with bigger disks in the future say going from 10TB disks to 20TB disks.) High level steps: 1. Plug in new disk. 2. Run 2 mdadm...

    Commercial or DIY NAS

If you're running a 4 disk R6 array, adding to extend to 5 disk and higher is easy. That doesn't change the hit on the disks though - extending a parity based array is not kind to the existing disks in the array. While technically a 2 disk failure could result in data loss it depends which...

    Commercial or DIY NAS

It's an interesting contradiction between minimising initial build cost vs total build of potentially (in UK costs) £2,500 in disks alone over the years (without replacements) for easier access to bluray content (you mentioned a lower concern on recovery because the BDs acted as backup) I get...

    Commercial or DIY NAS

I was a bit surprised you didn't mention your R10 setup and it's performance earlier ;). Joking aside though, one point I forgot @Hati - it wouldn't be migrate from a 2 disk R1 array to 4 disk R6, it would be build R6 missing 2 disks, copy over then add the original 2 disks (1 at a time) -...

    Commercial or DIY NAS

@Hati - While crystal balls aren't the best option for future predictions, did you have an idea on potential top capacity? Just curious on the decision to build raid1 then move to raid6. If you're looking at outsized disks then wouldn't you be better with raid10 over raid6? Raid6 is better...

    Average NAS disk age?

Interesting to see the comments on WD Green lifespan - I had some of them a while back for a few years. Rebuilt the array to increase size, scrubbed them and sold them and last I heard they're still going strong. I wonder how many people may be pushed away from WD drives by this - forcing a...

Auto Firmware Upgrade made official - a new Note in Asus FAQ

Not sure I'd go with tolerates but yes, manufacturers can get away with more and buyers have less ability to hold manufacturers to account.

    Average NAS disk age?

This article got me wondering about people's experience with drive ages in their NAS systems. Personally I've been lucky with many years and no failures but know others with the opposite experience. While power on hours is a useful indicator 3 years is a tad low and missing the hit of other...

Auto Firmware Upgrade made official - a new Note in Asus FAQ

This is where the question moves to what is domestic user (vs business vs enterprise). For a long long time, ISPs and router providers have been able to pretend they offer higher service levels than they really do. Consumer gear (and ISPs) are still what I'd term domestic orientated. As more...

Auto Firmware Upgrade made official - a new Note in Asus FAQ

Working from home or not is irrelevant - it's the QA that's the problem. I agree with the point on unmanaged vs managed that @sfx2000 mentioned though I have a slightly cynical view given support model variations and implied costs. If an ISP borks the modem it provides, that's a call direct to...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 388.3 is now available for the RT-AX88U_Pro

I have to say, I'm curious on the Asus numbering convention if a ...2 jump is a major change! Admittedly I don't follow their numbering schemes too closely but what happened to the likes of major/minor/patch? Or does this come back to a previous discussion on completely giving up trying to...

    RT-AX88U and TCP smart bulbs

Not excusing Asus but they're not exactly the only outfit to do that. Given a few experiences I've had I think the issue is likely to be the IoT device rather than the router. Unfortunately, they're hit and miss - even with my limited IoT setup I've had issues with devices hating beamforming or...

    RT-AX88U and TCP smart bulbs

What are the "legacy" settings for the 2.4 band? It looks like the tcp bulbs only go as high as N.

Merlin - automatic firmware update possible?

Happy to be corrected. I've just seen so many posts on these forums recommending it on threads with upgrade problems that it's become part my my upgrade process purely from a risk avoidance perspective. I'd always go in to an upgrade on something like a router with the lowest risk I can - even...

Merlin - automatic firmware update possible?

Review of user feedback for common threads that might affect my network configuration. The other bit, particularly with the merlin firmware is best practise is to remove USB keys before install. If I'm putting the network through the stress of a router upgrade I want to maximise the chance...

    NAS questions

@Widkidone Going back to your OP, what's the problem you're trying to solve using a NAS solution? You mention reducing a dependency on cloud services but in what context? Cost? You'll get quite a bit of cloud service for the cost of a NAS and 35TB of usable storage. And don't forget the...
