And test the backup. If you don't know for sure it can be restored there's no point doing the backup.

Merlin Firmware - use reboot scheduler or not?

That's the reason I started weaning my router off weekly reboots (possibly prompted by a similar post of yours) only to find memory leaks in networkmap and asd - so until Asus release a GPL with fixes, weekly reboots it is.

    adblocking recommendation

Not sure if there is an adguard version but if you're looking at block lists, the Firebog lists work pretty well for a combination of ad-blocking, malware and telemetry. (For those using Pi-Hole you can automate list updates from Firebog with https://github.com/jacklul/pihole-updatelists.) The...

New Threats to Asus Routers, few details.

Don't disagree on the attack surface and open source risk when it comes to vulnerabilities. Per device signed certificates given more control than keys though - albeit the limits of the ASUS routers meaning you can't necessarily revoke a single certificate. MFA based connections would be better...

New Threats to Asus Routers, few details.

I'm actually surprised I haven't seen something already in his thread calling out if you really need external connectivity then VPN with certificate based authentication is the way forward rather than basic ssh/https. It never ceases to amaze me that people expose basic user/password for this.

AC router 386.10 asd memory usage

Sorry to bring back this one among the multitude of asd threads but I wanted to confirm a behaviour before posting back... Strangely, after a reboot asd chews up memory at a rate of 1% to 2% a day. After killing the asd processes though memory stays stable - though I have noticed that sometimes...

Forced to reboot router to allow my laptop to connect to wifi and some other devices to work properly

Are you using any add ons? YazFi is the one I'm thinking here. I have some issues with router reboots because of the way YazFi seems to work (could be a guest WiFi1 issue but I haven't moved that to check yet) where a router reboot causes devices on the guest WiFi to get a LAN DHCP address...

To anyone who started seeing strange high CPU and memory usage - Merlin is not affected!

Which other thread are you referring to? If it's the one I started a couple of days back I'd say they're different issues - I've not seen the high CPU load and memory increase was slow but steady. (In fact the behaviour was consistent pre-and-post the routers current signature file.) But yes...

AC router 386.10 asd memory usage

I wondered if something like that might be the case - thanks @RMerlin. Ironically the only reason I've noticed this is I've been weaning the router off it's weekly reboots so the memory usage tripped a warning threshold. Is the asd process safe to do a killall on or better just reverting back...

AC router 386.10 asd memory usage

Thought I'd add this one. Key dates... - 25th April - updated to 386.10 - 1st May - scheduled reboot - 11th May - killed the networkmap process and added the cron job to do that daily. - 15th May - scheduled reboot

AC router 386.10 asd memory usage

Happy to leave it and see but what sort of time frame do you anticipate it might stabilise? The output above was after putting in the data capture but the first time around seeing it, the 3 processes were up at the 50,000 mark after 2 weeks of uptime. There's always the theory that memory is...

AC router 386.10 asd memory usage

After recently jumping a few versions on my AC88U to 386.10, memory usage has gone from being stable to increasing by a few % a day. Part of this was the networkmap memory usage that's been reported elsewhere and I believe would need Asus to provide a new 386 level GPL to be fixed (I have a...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.11 is now available for AC models

Stupid question time... (Partially for me and partially to pre-empt others in the thread!) Is it a correct statement that this does not fix the networkmap memory issue because it is closed source and requires a new GPL as 388.2 had?

Google may disable your gmail account if you send any email to a .ru domain

No idea on the reason for the deactivation but the contradiction between that and allowing the same group to host multiple apps taking payments through Google payment processing (that they profit from) is certainly an interesting one...

    Need buying advice on mini-PC

Probably not in the ballpark you're after if you're already familiar with Cyberpower software but you can meet the definition of "small managing multiple UPSs" with a raspberry pi and Network UPS Tools. It runs nicely in a container and supports the Cyberpower devices. Depending on your...

Philips Hue: lights off when nobody is home [script]

You can mix and match to suit - it lets you define how presence is set per person. (Or device - I had connectivity issues to the evohome gateway so I set that up as a "person" to track). For me it's the app and WiFi but just WiFi for the wife - for exactly the reason you mention. Just need the...

Philips Hue: lights off when nobody is home [script]

Interesting set up. You might want to take a look at Home Assistant. It has a bunch of stuff for just this and can support interactive prompts to your phone too. I used a similar approach, as we moved from full wfh to mixed/hybrid, to spot when none of us were in the house and send an...

Client traffic Grafana dashboard on RT-AC88U with MerlinWRT

Thanks for confirming. My working assumption is they won't be (similar data gathering I had before stopped working when I had to enable CTF as it bypassed the CPU/kernel) but I may have a play around to double check.

Client traffic Grafana dashboard on RT-AC88U with MerlinWRT

Interesting to see. Am I right in thinking this won't report correctly if using hardware acceleration?

How accurate are the automatic speed/quality tests?

With an added bonus when testing and experimenting - they're easy to wipe without having to worry about the mess left behind and significantly reduces the chance you break the machine they're running on. Takes a bit to understand them but we'll worth the effort.
