Hello, I'm new here, I'd like to build my own NAS

Sorry, catching up on a few posts on this thread. WD vs Seagate - Seagate did have a period for a while with a reputation for drive issues. That said I've been using a bunch of their Ironwolf drives without issue for a few years now. I haven't seen anything suggesting the Ironwolf drives...

Hello, I'm new here, I'd like to build my own NAS

Another alternative to marking disks as missing is use LVM. I tend to use it between the raid and file system for a bit more flexibility. In this instance you could buy 2 disks now setup in raid1. Add those as PVs to a volume group. When you want to extend later you can make another raid1...

    NAS Strategy

Future extensibility is always a good thing. Two options from what you've said... If you consider partitions sizes ahead of time then (assuming a Linux setup) LVM makes it easier to swap out drives for expansion later. For example... Starting with 4 6tb drives now, you could set them all up...

    NAS Strategy

Sorry, let me put the sata question another way. What storage target are you aiming to achieve? What raid config are you thinking after the earlier posts? 24TB can be achieved with 6 6tb disks in raid6 or 4 12tb disks in raid10. Not trying to push down your requirements just questioning...

    NAS Strategy

That's a pretty demanding setup but have you tried https://www.mini-itx.com/ Not sure where you're based (I've used them a couple of times here in the UK) but if nothing else they have a reasonable filter to search. Funnily enough I had a nose earlier today - Christmas spending and all that...

Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi for a DIY NAS ?

That card might be rated for that read speed in ideal lab environment (large file, continuous read etc) but it won't be close for the small random writes that the OS puts on the card. That's what slows the Pi down as it waits for a small write to a log file or a couple of rows to update in a DB.

Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi for a DIY NAS ?

One of these - https://thepihut.com/products/ssd-to-usb-3-0-cable-for-raspberry-pi Or an equivalent. You just need to update the config to boot from USB.

Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi for a DIY NAS ?

The Pi4s do tend to run hotter than earlier iterations. The fans tend to be pretty quiet though so I wouldn't worry about that. You can probably get away without one if you're only doing simple disk usage (no raid that uses parity blocks or similar for example) but I tend to default to a fan...

    YazFi YazFi DHCP lease times

@Martinski Seems to be running well so far. There might have been once instance where the changes didn't get flushed in to /etc/dnsmasq.conf but I haven't been able to reproduce that. One question on the code changes you've done.... I saw the new RetCode 2 being introduced to trigger a reload...

    NAS Strategy

I did only say probably ;). Western Digital in particular came to mind as a bad example with things like giving away root access or exposing a hard coded user/login. That doesn't detract from the risk someone that doesn't understand the security side can inadvertently expose themselves to by...

    NAS Strategy

#1 RAID is not backup, just resilient storage. If these photos truly matter make sure you have some form of offsite backup as part of your strategy (including restore testing - unless you are comfortable with schrodinger's backup). #2 Depends on your Plex use case. If you're just streaming as...

    YazFi YazFi DHCP lease times

Thanks @Martinski . I've got those and taking a look through the changes - out of interest more than anything. It'll be tomorrow before I can start bouncing the wifi without getting hassle from the family now...

    3 way Site-to-site OpenVPN

OK, that's starting to make a bit of sense. KL has a route pushed to get to JS but there isn't a route for JO (192.168.2/24) in that log - hence KL routes to JO via the default gateway. Going back over your original post, the routes listed for server 1 (used for KL to connect) don't include...

    3 way Site-to-site OpenVPN

Makes sense on the reason - I was just curious. What do the logs show when connecting the VPN client from KL - can you see it adding the route? What does ip route get <address at JÖ> show? I'm not particularly familiar with the internals of OpenVPN and routing setups but I see something...

    3 way Site-to-site OpenVPN

Does all traffic between KL and JÖ have to be seen by JS? Just wondering why not set KL and JÖ up as servers for direct connect rather than chewing up JS bandwidth with traffic between them. So each site running 1 server and 2 clients.

    YazFi YazFi DHCP lease times

I was going to take a look next week when things quietened down here but you beat me too it - looks like testing only by then. Let me know when you're done and I'll drop it on my router for a spin. Agree on the code - gave me more insight on how the firmware works in general between UI and...

    YazFi YazFi DHCP lease times

I tend to use the WebGUI to set but lack of practice on ASP/JS was the reason I went for the easy option. I've not used ASP before but @Jack Yaz - Dare I ask the reason github shows line 164 of the ASP as being about 32K long! o_O I was tempted to have a go at the WebGUI side until I saw that...

    YazFi YazFi DHCP lease times

Must admit, I did contemplate that but between the UI changes also needed and my use case it felt over the top. Have you looked at the ASP changes or just the scripting side?

Did you want a github PR or happy with the patch by SNB route?

    YazFi YazFi DHCP lease times

Happy to put in a PR if Jack wants but in the meantime in the (unlikely!) event anyone else is interested, this patch links the YazFi DHCP leases to the broader DHCP lease time configuration:
