REQ: support for GT series (spec GT-AXE11000)

Actually although it is not a guarantee for a an Asus GT model to be added to the Merlin WRT firmware, there is the possibility of it maybe happening as Asus collaborated with @RMerlin from my understanding for the firmware to include the GT routers such as the GT-AX11000 as before Merlin would...

The move back to OpnSense, 5 Pillars to build network on.

If in a personal house, a 2 Firewall concept is really not needed. I would stick to the i7 for OpnSense, but for bandwidth and stability, add some 2.5G/10G PCie Ethernet cards from Intel/Aquatia. Use the ASUS AX11000 more or less in AP mode. If you add all the proper rules, you can lockdown the...

Switch back to Pfsense from Opnsense and why.

Both are good options, but Opnsense seemed to have more support at the time and the updates were coming faster. I do miss a few things on Pfsense, such as the Shaper/QOS wizard. I am hoping Opnsense adds one soon, as practically all routers have that feature, even in the basic ones.

REQ: support for GT series (spec GT-AXE11000)

Actually I have not looked at the Merlin builds for a while due to owning a GT-11000, and just for a moment, I did take a look and to my surprise the 386 firmware supports a couple GT based routers with the GT-AX11000 being one of them. There are a few minor changes to know about and I would...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

Absolutely agree. The AMD CPUs and more particular the APUs are well configurable especially in targeting the TDP limits you want. AMD has been very generous to allowing the power envelope to be adjusted with lower or higher TDP limits with minor configuration changes. That is why I am leaning...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

Thanks. Always good to talk with other tech savvy people and share experiences and what not. What you mentioned with power draw can be hit and miss with this CPU and one of the reasons to get better hardware that gives better performance/per watt, but AES-NI support would be a major reason I was...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

I may have to look at it further. Will backup the config and look further at settings. I think the other part is I am currently running it on an old Core2Quad Q6600 CPU with 4GB DDR3 memory. When the time comes to upgrade, I will probably end up going to the Ryzen 5600G APU since I will be...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

Correct LAN traffic is switching and a good switch can handle it well. I should of been a little more clear too, as I was thinking of traffic going through 2 different subnets. In my case traffic still has to come back through the router to talk to the other subnet on a different NIC. I could...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

Yeah I was thinking more internal 10G on the LAN side along with if you do heavy LAN operations, it would be a good fit. WAN I can not say I really know anyone who has 10G for home use, and that is not a business. Even Comcast is right now just getting to 2G Internet. I can see maybe 5G in the...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

The I5-8250U is typically more expensive with less cores/threads. The Ryzen 5600G APU is in a 65W package but can be configured to lower power draw, or can get the 5600GE which is essentially same but already configured to draw less power with max tdp 35W. Both of those choices are with 2...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

When you get into the meatier pieces of Pfsense and Opnsense memory and even CPU can be worth the load. Not as much on the graphics side, but having the graphics baked into the CPU, frees up a PCIe slot. If planning on doing multiple 2.5G-10G connections, the more cores/threads, the better it...

AMD 5000 APU launching and could make a good case for a NAS plex server or Pfsense or Opnsense custom router

So AMD has finally revealed the Ryzen APU 5000 series processors, and the 5600G at 259.99 already looks very attractive. This would be decent for a NAS or Plex Server for multimedia content due to the Radeon Graphics on board and 6 Core/12 Thread CPU. It also makes a strong case for the DIY...

Help me choose a new router

For me it is just a small network cabinet housed in a closet. I have a custom NAS/Gaming Multimedia Server running Windows Server 2019, 24 Port Gigabit Managed Switch, The custom built OpnSense Firewall Router, MultiGig Netgear CM1000 Cable Modem, HDHomeRun Prime3, and Asus GT-AX11000 Wireless...

Help me choose a new router

Trend Micro is not phoning home or anything, and ASUS built it as a hardware and firmware combo, so it works hand in hand with the Router. I am thinking you are also not looking at having a router that has all it's features and defenses down. Sometimes the hardware is better then the software...

Help me choose a new router

I am right there. I am was back and forth between PfSense and OpnSense and after some updates and seeing where they were going, I completely stuck with OpnSense and have not looked back. Have the main part of my Network in a Rack mounted cabinet.

Help me choose a new router

The TrendMicro functionality in it is not really bad. Before I did my custom router running OpnSense, I had some features enabled and TrendMicro hardware security in the router was pretty decent and something I can recommend, but also can take away from the bandwidth as @Tech9 mentioned and why...

News Linksys Starts Shipping 6E Mesh System, Announces $500 6E Router

AM I reading that correct? 5Gps WAN port? Not too shabby, seems one thing is increasing quickly and that is bandwidth. Here I thought 2.5Gbps was more then enough, I mean with modems just moving to adding a 2.5Gps WAN port as standard. If the likes of Comcast and others continue speed up their...

Help me choose a new router

The RT-AC3200 theoretically should be able to handle the 940Mb speed you would get as it has a 1Gb WAN port and the LAN ports are 1Gb, however as devices are also added to the device, the bandwidth may have to be divided if for instance multiple devices are accessing that bandwidth at once. That...

Broadband Routers to be the next piece of hardware to feel the chip shortage

Was browsing the Internet and just saw this article. Crazy times we are in.....Oh great, now broadband routers are at risk of being in short supply too. Was posted by Paul Lily of PC Gamer. The chip shortage is unfortunately real and not going away anytime soon.

Is there anything 1 level above pfSense?

You know what I think we both were on the same page, but where I meant SMT off has no affect on heat or power draw and it is similar with SMT on, is when they are locked at pretty much the same clock speed. I did and did not fully equate PBO into the equation as that can boost and draw more...
