    Diversion Diversion 4.3.3 - the Router Ad-Blocker, released April 02 2023

I'll add my vote to the "drop" count. It has long been agreed that this cannot be fully effective as a DNS based blocker of ads served from the same source as the content. I applaud the effort that went into it of course.

    [Dev] Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 development

Running Wireguard on a desktop might be roughly three times faster than OpenVPN (maybe), but I have yet to see a consumer router that can achieve a that kind of improvement, at best it seems to approach double the speed. Still impressive, but not the same.

    [Dev] Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 development

I too have been wondering where the massive hype surrounding Wireguard has been coming from. Yes, in some applications it can be faster than OpenVPN, but it's amazing how it has consumed a large percentage of popular perception that it is a Must Have Now. Meh...

RT-AX86U PRO page now up ...

Ok, perhaps technically the issues surrounding the RT-AC86U go deeper than simply the CPU running warm: it seems that the bigger problem was surrounding the voltage regulation chip, with it having a nasty habit of burning out prematurely. It really doesn't matter, I just wish we would see the...

RT-AX86U PRO page now up ...

Yes, one thing that I noted was the die process size went down from 28nm to 16nm: often this can lead to lower power consumption and heat production, all other things being equal (yes, this new unit did get a speed bump, so take this with a grain of salt here). Still, even the "normal" RT-AX86U...

Future predictions - which AX router will be supported longest?

I'm surprised that no-one has commented on the price: $225 would put this new "Pro" model about $50 lower than the current selling price of the "regular" RT-AX86U, and barely higher than the RT-AX86S. Seems highly unlikely (but would be welcome), a more likely scenario is this was a typo, and...

    ASUS RT-AC86U Issue/Dead (Eth4 LED Only)

I almost reached for the "like" button, but that didn't seem appropriate at all. Now I just need to convince the CFO (my wife) that we need to replace our currently functioning RT-AC86U with a newer router....yeah well, because it is likely to die, probably imminently. That's going to go over...

    Blocking Youtube ads

Thanks for confirming, I thought you were experiencing a rather "exceptional" (ahem) lack of ads with your setup. Now I understand why :). Intrigued by your other suggestion nevertheless, will look into it.

    Blocking Youtube ads

Really? I'm surprised, as I thought that the consensus was that no DNS based blocking would be fully effective, and it would always require more advanced means (browser based plugins, etc..).

    Wireguard and fw 3.0.0.4.388.20000?

Wow, profound marketing mistake in this day and age to tie a product name to a year: especially given that more than half of that year is now past and the associated products still aren't quite out yet.

    Wireguard and fw 3.0.0.4.388.20000?

    Speculation, or confirmed somewhere?

    Wireguard and fw 3.0.0.4.388.20000?

Thanks, even if I didn't specifically mention 6E. Maybe my expectations are unrealistic, but most consumer electronics gain features and generally stay at nearly the same price, or even trend down over time. The home/consumer AIO router market has been defying that lately.

    Wireguard and fw 3.0.0.4.388.20000?

I'm well aware of the general price inflation we are all experiencing, but this also seems like a general trend toward "price creep": a mid-range "consumer/home user" AIO router for several years was in the $200-$250 range, now the expectation starts closer to $300, with many models well into...

    RT-AX86U to be discontinued?

It's clearly all about Asus picking just the right "check the boxes" mix of features to have an insanely wide range of models, chosen as carefully as possible to try to prevent cannibalization of sales from other models, rather than what is technically possible and useful from a consumer...

    RT-AX86U to be discontinued?

I am aware of it, just a little too "extreme" for my tastes (in both appearance and likely price range).
  16. J

    RT-AX86U to be discontinued?

That's unfortunate, as having at least a pair of higher speed ports made a much more compelling reason to wait for that Pro model (over the current RT-AX86U). Now I am starting to hope that the current model is discontinued in favor of this Pro one (presuming this one slots in at basically the...

    RT-AX86U to be discontinued?

How can it be an 8-month wait if this model is due to launch in August/September (this year presumably), and launch with 388 series firmware that is expected to have fully integrated Wireguard support (client and server)? Even if it doesn't become widely available until October/November, that's...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.7 is now available for all models

^^+1. It always cracks me up to see people absolutely freaked out to see that their RAM usage went up. In 99% of these cases, they have no negative consequences to report, just alarm on their part.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.7 is now available for all models

Yes, it's always best to do the factory reset AFTER the new firmware upgrade, not prior to. Never understood the logic that would lead to doing it before the upgrade.

Why DNS over TLS is so important, and if you are not using it you should be

As reported in other threads on SNB, this only affects MIPS routers, so by definition none of the currently supported AsusWRT-Merlin routers. If you are still using an older MIPS based Asus router as your primary, internet facing router, it's probably time to move on to something newer for many...
