    Mysterious loss of connectivity

This syslog covers restart: https://pastebin.com/yn29TvHy Modem log here: https://pastebin.com/bskC2z4T So modem reconnects owing to 48 hour ISP refresh and my Asus router doesn't properly pick up new IP? In any case this is bad. Router should really not just crap out like this and require...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

Thanks for confirming. Just wanted to check it wasn't an issue with the firmware. Weird that they do that, right?

    Mysterious loss of connectivity

Really appreciate your help here since I am really struggling. It happened again tonight - I lost connectivity. I had to manually stop and start WAN again to get things to work. I think this has something to do with my router working with a stale WAN IP assigned by my ISP, right? In any case...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

I asked NordVPN and they say they don't redirect 8.8.8.8 DNS queries. Can anyone try setting DNS filter to custom 8.8.8.8 and see whether that DNS server gets used correctly? For me if I set to 1.1.1.1 I see Cloudflare reported correctly on dnsleaktest but if I set 8.8.8.8 I see my VPN DNS...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

Update worked first time on my RT-AX86u. No issues. Although surprisingly the router tried to work with a movie file when I uploaded that by mistake!

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

I use NordVPN. They offer the following DNS's: 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100. I have CleanBrowsing Family set as my WAN DNS, and I override in DNS Filter to one of the NordVPN DNS servers above for my televisions because this unblocks Netflix and Amazon Prime (otherwise these services detect...

DNS mode disabled. If I set Custom to 1.1.1.1 then Cloudflare DNS gets correctly set. If I set Custom to 8.8.8.8 then the reported DNS is the VPN DNS?!

Just simply using: https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ That creates unique lookup requiring the ultimate DNS server to resolve right? In any case, I have tested a few times and the behaviour seems consistent.

Optimal LTE 4G MTU / WAN Packet Overhead

Does this technique still allow for 4G LTE overhead? Could it be that given 4G LTE overhead the packet is still fragmented and then reassembled during transmission? So the ping report reports no fragmentation but this is just because of reassembly? Do we know how many bytes of overhead 4G LTE...

Optimal LTE 4G MTU / WAN Packet Overhead

Mindful of, e.g.: https://www.etsi.org/deliver/etsi_tr/126...80000p.pdf This makes me wonder: what is the optimal MTU set for a 4G LTE connection, to maximise throughput and avoid fragmentation? Should this value be the same in OpenVPN? I have been experimenting with QoS-CAKE, in which...

    Backing up Router Config

Thanks So the encryption key is presumably stored in the output file give that it is randomly applied, so that the upload process can properly work notwithstanding the randomisation of the encryption key?

    Backing up Router Config

If we save using 'nvram save' and upload using the GUI does the GUI still use the correct decryption process? I presume the 'nvram save' and 'nvram restore' encyrption/decryption is the same? Is the encryption/obfuscation just based on the output of 'nvram show'? We could presumably work out the...

    Backing up Router Config

Thanks again for your input. I think I used the GUI to upload JFFS and then the CFG, which I think automatically performs a reset, but then notices VPN wouldn't connect with 'config error'. Maybe something gets lost in respect of VPN here though.
  14. Lynx

    Backing up Router Config

Ah thank you! Would using GUI to restore the NVRAM and JFFS be expected to keep everything running? I think I tried this earlier and saw that VPN wouldn't connect: error - check config. But maybe I didn't do something properly. Any thoughts?

    Backing up Router Config

Concerning nvram, and: why is the output significantly different to the output downloaded from the GUI? Does that mean that the GUI should not be used to restore the nvram save? Am I missing anything? Concerning JFFS, using the following form to save my JFFS: tar -cf - -C /jffs . | rclone...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

Sorry, I have tested further and it seems the issue that I experienced does not relate to the choice of Custom field in DNS filter, and is rather something more subtle. This is with a VPN client. If I set it to '1.1.1.1' then '1.1.1.1' gets used. If I set any of the custom fields to '8.8.8.8'...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

I found a bug I think. Try entering any custom DNS in DNS Filter in custom 3, i.e. the third box. Assign it to a device. Observe that the custom set DNS is not applied. Would anyone here be willing to confirm please?

It is also kina cool just how flexible these routers are, even though running a Plex or Torrent server seems wacky.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

That's cool about the way the VPN DNS is handled. However DNS Exclusive doesn't play nicely with Diversion. I still think it would be really nice to just have all LAN default to VPN and simply create any necessary WAN exceptions. Would be just great if VPN Director could be used to provide the...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.3 is now available

Thanks RMerlin. Sorry to labour this, but to be clear, there is presently no straightforward way to have all traffic including router directed to VPN with one or two WAN exceptions? Would it be possible with redirect: yes and a line or two in a script file? If so, any suggestion as to what lines...
