    Neither myself nor many, many others have this issue, so MOST clearly it is NOT "an issue with Asus routers" in and of themselves. Either you've got a faulty unit or you're mis-configuring it in a way your other units mis-behave-to-suit when also so configured.

    One last(?) thing. If/when(!) you try AP mode on the second unit, you must not let the second unit "see" (wired /or/ wireless) the "router" unit running until you've got the second configured as AP (or media bridge/repeater, etc.), or you'll waste a lot of time.     For setting up mesh just use the method you'd like. In AP mode (my preference for performance improvement) I use the same SSID on all 2.4 and 5-1 and a different one on all 5-2. Different 2.4 channels as well 5-2 channels. No way to do that under mesh. 5-1 have to be the same channels since...

    I believe in that situation they'll automatically use the wire. If you have wire available, I highly suggest you compare system performance in both mesh and AP modes.

    Different printed circuit board layout (likely due mostly to the outer case shape and size, plus the lack of need for the Aura LED lighting of the GT model); exact same CPU and radios / drivers. I keep seeing it said the RT model has a better RF design, but unless the circuit board somehow...

    That app is available on f-droid.org (they have a package management app which I recommend as a first choice before "play store") if'n you want google to track you ever so much less. Not sure whether apps there are themselves compiled less-googly internally but have seen apps freely available...

    A backup only after a successful reboot. Might've been tinkering and after some time thought "okay, this is good now" but if there hasn't been a successful reboot into that "good known" state it could very well be not-so-good after all. Not frequent, but /does/ happen that way at times.

    It's time to test the wireless with non-Apple products before blame can be squarely laid on the router. It's the only way to be sure. Unless you've yet to reset the wireless on those products...

    Well, if something wasn't working correctly (why else reset the configuration?), why would it be a valid supposition that restoring the config would turn out differently afterward?

    Interesting. I'd likely assume that "per band" meant just that. SSID is different than band. Have you /tried/ the same SSID to confirm what they'd told you?

    Certainly can't hurt. Since the extender is above the router it may be helpful to splay the antennas on both. Typically the light shines from and is picked up by the antennas inversely to what happens with a flashlight - almost none through the ends.

    So far my investigation, which involves fetching and extracting the firmware for comparison, indicates that which I stated above. In fact, within the build configuration file the XT9 is called XT8 Pro. I would not value the functional difference nearly so high as $100 (as also stated above)...

    The fix is to only restore a configuration to the same router it came from running the same firmware it was running when the config was saved.

    Investigate similarly though perhaps more carefully the gl-inet flint2 and see if it'll offer more control for you.
