Do you guys feel any difference between AX86U and Pro?

I hope Merlin can eventually work his magic on the Beta version once it gets released to the normal firmware channel. Having Merlin’s firmware with the Beta VLAN capabilities would be a great solution… for an Asus. :)

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

The DDNS on the ER605 updates hourly. I used to use a client on a pc for updating. Now I use the DDNS provided by Asus on the AX86U Pro.

Do you guys feel any difference between AX86U and Pro?

Other than the vlan support in the Beta firmware, it’s about the same performance as the AX-86U I ran for a little while.

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

To be honest, the best use of the ER605 in “stand alone” configuration is as a multi wan device. If used with a TP-Link Omada controller and AP units it can do a lot more.

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

No, it will not see anything but your Asus if the Asus is in normal router mode.

Got my new USB modem in and online with the ER605 !!

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

Yes, I have used double/triple NAT with multiple DMZ forwarding for a long time and have never had an issue. It can get tricky sometimes.

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

I hope it works. My cable modem supports Bridge Mode but it was never stable. I am sure it is due to the way my cable ISP handles their network, hence the reason for my triple NAT usage.

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

If you can not place your ISP device in Bridge or Pass Through mode, then place the ER605 in a DMZ on the ISP device. This is what I have to do. Then on the ER605, place your Asus in a DMZ. I know, triple NAT but it has been working great for me without any issues. The Wireguard server and...

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

I was running a USB Modem as a third failover but changed wireless carriers and have not yet gotten another USB modem from the new carrier.

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

There is a question on that subject I came across on another forim. They recommend checking the Load Balance regardless if you plan to actually run Load Balancing or Failover. The mode of operation is mainly influenced by your link backup settings. This is where some settings are not...

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

The default LAN IP is 192.168.0.1 on a /24 network. You may want to change that to something that will not conflict with ISP routers/modems that may default to the same schema. I chose 192.168.230.1 so I was pretty certain there would not be any conflicts.

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

Another note on the USB modem, it may take the router a little while to recognize it and populate the information. You may have to select the carrier information manually. Of course, I am going on experience from a US side of things, not other countries. :)

Asus RT-AC5300 and Dual Wan load balancing configuration

The major drawback to this little router is the 3-4 minute boot time. Be patient as it will seem like an eternity and you will think it is not working. But then again, it rarely needs rebooting and usually only during firmware upgrades and when adding the USB mode as that will trigger a reboot.

Sorry I am late to the “party” :) First thing, make sure you are running the latest firmware. https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/er605/#Firmware

News Don't use VPN providers - use your own...

I use a vpn service that provides me 2 dedicated business IPs. I use this service for geo location bypass so my wife can watch her favorite MLB team. If I need to use a vpn away from home, I use a wireguard server running on a Firewalla Blue Plus on my fiber 100/100 service. This works real good.
