Will mixed ethernet/wireless backhaul on AIMesh work without a hitch?

Turn off the “forced” ethernet backhaul setting on your node ac86u. It does a good job of auto detecting the backhaul connections without it. You should then be able to add your ac68u. Are you running stock firmware or RMerlin on your units?

Asus XT-8 Internal Routing / Roaming Issue

Have you tried updating to the latest firmware?

    Partner mesh router?

If your AC86U is still working good, you can use it. If you want another AX router, maybe look at a AX86S.

Pros/Cons of preloaded Netgate appliance vs. installing on own hardware?

I would look into a Firewalla Gold for your needs. Same price range as a Netgate 4100 and a lot easier to setup and manage. It also handles remote workers very easily. I just mention it as an option. If you need business support then Netgate would be the preferred solution.

Pros/Cons of preloaded Netgate appliance vs. installing on own hardware?

@Tech9 is the one who can answer your Netgate questions. I know when I was running pfSense updates were easy and pretty much automatic if your settings allowed it.

    Firewalla Gold Plus Suitability

It is really easy, hence the reason I went back to the Firewalla. I rarely use a PC for anything other than my Plex server.

    Firewalla Gold Plus Suitability

You are definitely correct about my hardware change cycles! I will say that I feel confident that the Firewalla Gold is a keeper. The only reason I moved away from the first one I had was my “unatural fear” of a cloud based control device. Alas, in this day and age that is getting increasingly...

Anyone using an Asus router with a fiber connection?

    Wow, another Brightspeed customer!! :p

    Firewalla Gold Plus Suitability

I do not have IPv6 available on either of my connections so I am no help on that question. As for DDNS, I use my own domain name and simply use a CNAME entry and point it to the DDNS hostname used by the Firewalla.

    Firewalla Gold Plus Suitability

I will take it for 75% off if you don’t want. :)

adding XT8 as wireless node to a ethernet backhaul mesh?

You can go into that node and set the wifi uplink priority to the main router.

    Asus GT-AC2900 maximize speed

:p True, true…. so far, I am very satisfied with my current setup. My last encounter with the XT8 were less than satisfactory. This time using the latest factory firmware they are very stable and I am very happy with their performance. They make a good combination in AP mode behind the...

    Asus GT-AC2900 maximize speed

Even then I am still good with my measly 300Mbps service?

    Asus GT-AC2900 maximize speed

That may be true, but neither is using old hardware that was never designed to handle 1 gig speeds.

    Asus GT-AC2900 maximize speed

If you are that concerned about getting most out of your 1 Gig connection, you may need to move to more robust business class hardware instead of home consumer stuff.

Recommend me an ASUS reliable low cost router

Yes, that does change the equation. That large of house really calls for a more business class solution and installation for best performance.

    Asus XT8 LAN 3 problem

I know the later XT8 firmware support wired backhaul whereas originally the ZenWiFi units had very poor or non existent support for wired backhaul. I have found that on my XT8 v1 units, even with latest firmware, wireless backhaul still works the best. Your other option would be to try an...

Recommend me an ASUS reliable low cost router

If your friend is interested in a simple, cost effective, setup and forget wifi mesh solution then I recommend starting with a pair of eero Pro 6 units. They can be purchased for $300 off Amazon and adding nodes as needed is a very simple process. I do not recommend their 6E units as they have...

Release ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.22525

So far this 22525 seems to be working very good, but I am not really testing it’s full potential since I am using my XT8s in AP mode. The dedicated wireless backhaul is doing great and using channel 173.

Recommend me an ASUS reliable low cost router

Just get a GT-AX6000 and add more as needed.
