Terrible WiFi performance after MerlinASUS firmware update

Gnerally, it is considered a BP to pin your router to the "least" overlapped channels (2.4 (1, 6, or 11) and 5GHz (Channel 48 for some reason I forget is always the preferred). This stops the router from constantly changing channels in search of something better b/c of neighbors which also...

    Strange cooling/power issue

I and many others written about the nasty interference generated by cheaply made switching PSU as well as even "LED nightlights". CFLs are a common offender as are many LED lighting fixtures. An earlier poster alluded to the same issues. Believe it or not, these things can generate huge...

    uiDivStats Stat generation times

I've been watching this file a while and using AMTM + Tooling since it was first delivered. Jack, any DB maint planned or happening WRT size / pruning by date or age? I'm asking b/c this seems a bit large and maybe needs pruning by date? The GUI basically stopped displaying anything. I'm...

    DNS issues - overloading server

^^^ Hi, I leverage QUAD9 for the two WAN DNS entries which are only used while the router is booting to get the time, etc.. It's been years since I used my ISP's DNS. I have no experience with ATT high-speed internet services b/c they are not available to my location. Some people also mix...

    DNS issues - overloading server

Disabling the DOS attack in Merlin is the first thing to hit and it worked! Please note: Other users have reported similar issues with DOS enabled in these versions. Still others have reported no issues with DOS on. I turned DOS OFF/Disabled for now. I've been watching things related to...

RT-AX88U - Is it possible to overclock it?

While you cannot "overclock" these units, you can turn OFF the "green" elements. These greens are essentially put those specific subsystems to sleep or "lower power mode" to reduce power consumption, heat etc.. The tradeoff is always performance. The transition from sleeping to actually...

    Router temperatures

^^^^Without a 3rd party teardown, evaluation and verification of what ASUS (or ANY router maker) does inside any model - we don't know - all models could share similar cost/thermal compromises. ASUS's AX86U, uses a similar vertical design (but it has some opening changes) so they may have made...

    Router temperatures

^^^ The root issue is all about engineering vs cost/assembly/warranty tradeoffs. I'll explain some of the decision making which goes any manufactured device for those that want a few details for how the electronics industry works. If that's not interesting, then skip the rest of this post...

    Router temperatures

^^ Correct. We've talked about and proven this on several threads. We only have to push just a very small amount of air thru these units to lower the thermals dramatically. The slower the fan turns, the lower the noise but it still delivers very well! Stay safe, stay alive! Peace.

Asus Merlin AC68U and NextDNS issues

10-4. NextDNS is a great service and the web gui is the icing. My gotcha is it has to be more reliable than I've seen since January '21. Again, I used it without issues for more than a year. I tried for 2 weeks putting the family thru "dns hell" before I fell back to Quad9. I'll try again...

Should I Be Worried? (Router Temp)

^^^ Without external means - tough to impossible! If your router is out of warranty, then attaching a small fan, as described in detail in several recent threads, blowing onto/into the rear of the router is the most cost-effective solution to lowering the operating temps. If you do not want...

Skynet Does countryblock stop trendmicro? please advise

    ^^^ Ah.. my bad. OK I have CN country-blocked in skynet and I still see the trendmicro.com queries whiz by (non-red) when I follow the Diversion color-coded logs. ... Apr 23 08:27:25 dnsmasq[2951]: reply settingsfd-geo.trafficmanager.net is 52.167.17.97 Apr 23 08:27:25 dnsmasq[2951]: validation...

Asus Merlin AC68U and NextDNS issues

^^ Sure. These few things OTOMH: a) When researching "trying the NextDNS client" I read that the NextDNS client pretty much takes over the router's DNS and ignores the "DNS Filter" page. Well before NextDNS, I learned (with Diversion) that the ~ 6 IOT devices (cameras, etc...) are more...

Skynet Does countryblock stop trendmicro? please advise

Can't we just block "trendmicro.com" and be done? I see those queries too.

Asus Merlin AC68U and NextDNS issues

Thanks! I agree! I reported issues and Olivier has been very responsive - a big plus! However, I've not been able to use NextDNS in ~ 3 weeks b/c the stability I had for the prior year in manual configuration mode, as outlined on the site has not returned. The last answer was to "try using...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 is now available

^^^ This recent thread covered that miniupnpd being stealthily re-activated and how it must be turned off in several places on the routers and the newer routers added yet another place to deactivate *@(*@* upnp which is a valid high security concern to turn off and keep off...

Unbound unbound_manager (Manager/Installer utility for unbound - Recursive DNS Server) - General questions / discussion thread 2

I've been debating a similar case for weeks in my head and the overall consensus I've read is, "... if you are not going to use unbound as the authoritative, then why bother using unbound?" I had wanted to try it for a similar case with NextDNS. I wanted NextDNS for the blocking, filter and...

Asus Merlin AC68U and NextDNS issues

There's a way to test for if NTP has been set but I cannot put my fingers on that code segment right now. I have a manual setup (no client) which I had to disable about 3 weeks ago now... I could not get nextdns to stay happier for more than about 36 hours. My manual setup had worked for a...

    Entware update available

Thanks for the update. The entware updates seem to be the "nail-biters" for our amtm community. I see a lot of updates coming this time.

Advice: Best merlin compatible router for adaptive QoS but not using Wi-fi

My gut says our RT-AC86U (2 pCORES) will perform very well for most workloads. I've used this model for several years with the default Merlin (or stock) firmware and settings. The RT-AX86U (4 pCORES) has more pCPU capacity and headroom to handle more concurrent jobs. It is when we start...
