    Router temperatures

Did you read my next paragraph? I literally said that the preexisting hardware thermal management issues were the reason for the overheating. However I am also not wrong that the new firmware is an absolute contributor to pushing the routers over the edge. Hence the issue *is* firmware...

    Router temperatures

I have been using services-start without any issues, though init-start is probably a better idea. I might change mine to that.

    Router temperatures

It is primarily on the ac86u. Owners of other routers have also reported higher temps, but they are in a minority AFAIK.

    Router temperatures

I guarantee you, it is related to the firmware. We know of a very specific set of changes that were made that contribute to the worst of the temperature increases, namely the CPU Wait and EEE settings. The remainder is something deeper, and probably AIMesh related. You are right though that it...

    Router temperatures

Mine was running a bit hot, but was definitely 15 degrees or so hotter on 386.1. In that version of firmware, the CPU wait state was disabled, which added a huge heat load. Merlin switched that off himself. The EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet) was also disabled, which creates heat for every...

That's still not quite how Ohm's law works. Remember that W = I^2 x R Adding resistance will increase power linearly, but the resultant drop in current will reduce power by the square of the current. Adding resistance to a fixed voltage circuit ultimately reduces the power and heat generation...

None that I have encountered. It was on by default before 386.1.

When they are relying on a 2.5mm thermal pad for thermal coupling, you can bet your proverbial that is variations in manufacturing. That kind of construction could never be consistently applied.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 Beta is now available

Things are relatively smooth with this beta on my rt-ac86u, except I am losing my connection after 24-48 hours after a reboot. The last disconnection was accompanied by the following log entries: Mar 16 15:20:06 Mastiff: Got SIGTERM Mar 16 15:20:12 lldpd[9076]: cannot get ethtool link...

    Router temperatures

I note in your Hack/mod thread that you have used a 3mm copper shim for the CPU. To me, this would be the ideal fix, as it resolves the underlying issue with the standard heat-sink solution, and isn't a potentially noisy band-aid by adding a fan. I'm also skeptical that adding additional...

    CakeQOS CakeQOS-Merlin v1.0.8

You can add options using the following format: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/asuswrt-merlin-386-2-beta-is-now-available.71038/page-7#post-672157 However, you do not want to use the "lan" option for your connection. For those rtt parameters, you want to use the option that most closely...

    Router temperatures

You'd be surprised at the temperature difference between using a single LAN port vs multiple ports when eee is switched off. Easy to check yourself though. Unplug the Mesh node and see what happens. In any case, as long as the temperature doesn't get any higher than the 90-91 it is now, you...

    Router temperatures

There is also the "Energy Efficient Ethernet" (EEE) option that was switched off since the 386.1 firmware. If you are using more than one of the LAN ports on the ac86U with EEE switched off, then that will led to a significant temperature increase (5+ degrees C). I have added a command to...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 Beta is now available

Ahh gocha, yep, I see what you mean now. Probably best not to call qos-start twice then. I'll have a play and see if I can adapt any of the rules I found on the OpenWRT forums. You're a legend :)

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 Beta is now available

In your first post you said that qos-start runs before /tmp/qos If so, that won't allow me to add download DSCP rules because the download interface will not exist yet. Or did have I missed something?

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 Beta is now available

Yep, sorry, I was probably not explaining myself properly. What I am looking for is a nice neat location/script for defining the skbedit rules which will execute after /tmp/qos At the moment, there doesn't appear to be a readily available script that runs after the download interface is created.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 Beta is now available

No, those are the cake options and I am aware of where to find documentation for those. I am referring to the syntax for adding those options into the cake-qos.conf.add file. I only knew how to add those options after manually examining the /tmp/qos script.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 Beta is now available

Thanks for that post. That was a handy reference. Where was the information about the "ULOPTIONS" and "DLOPTIONS" variables in the first place? RMerlin mentions that the cake-qos.conf.add file was for adding configurations, but made no mention of "how". I presume you just looked into the...

    ntpMerlin ntpMerlin v3.x

I think this is another case of the clock drift not being associated with the CPU temperature, but rather the board temperature. The problem is that the board temperature is not directly measurable. From the drift graph that was posted earlier, a +/- 2ppm drift in response to ambient...
