Gaming router? Need my first REAL router.

Apple Airport Extreme Hi The AAE is not listed in the link you posted above, but: read the review. The AAE really does quite well in its review here. It is solid, stable, reliable. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31564-apple-airport-extreme-gen-5-reviewed...

Leo LePorte! DSLExtreme! Leo uses it....and really they have a great reputation. They do not service where I am, or I would sign up with them!

Do routers lose strength over time?

Approaching 600 comments There are now almost 600 replies to the "weakening wireless" post on Slashdot: http://ask.slashdot.org/story/12/10/21/1335208/ask-slashdot-why-does-wireless-gear-degrade-over-time sfx--I think my old WRT54G v1.1 was still good--its wall wart died. When I looked...

Do routers lose strength over time?

Same question posted on Slashdot Figure the odds: someone just posed the exact same question on Slashdot. http://ask.slashdot.org/story/12/10/21/1335208/ask-slashdot-why-does-wireless-gear-degrade-over-time Consensus is that wireless performance itself does not degrade, it's increased noise...

    100 yards of wifi

$15 a month $14.95 Basic DSL is now the cheapest high speed internet service offered by AT&T. There are other search engines too that might help find budget service--depending on where grandma lives. http://dslfor10.com/

Belkin 750N+ vs Netgear WNDR4000 vs Linksys EA4200

Airport Extreme AAE review here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31564-apple-airport-extreme-gen-5-reviewed The AC66U gets a lot of buzz, the review is popular, it's got blinky lights (which, to be quite honest, I really like), it looks like Darth Vader's router...

Belkin 750N+ vs Netgear WNDR4000 vs Linksys EA4200

Apple Airport Extreme Your quote: I just want to get the thing set up and never have to touch it again. This may be a bit controversial here, but: Apple Airport Extreme. Set it and forget it. And: you have iDevices. It will of course work very well with them. Has great range. Simple...

Do routers lose strength over time?

Magic Smoke? Of course a cool place with good air circulation is best--and wall mounting can be good for that. Maybe others here have some experience in this regard. I had one of those Linksys WRT54Gs (v1.1) that lasted a very long time--they still sell them, but's it 2.4ghz band only.....

    100 yards of wifi

Electrical potential Hi DevNull, a friend of mine had internet in main house/2 bedroom "granny flat" in back, about 70 to 100 yards. I looked into main house switch >> ethernet cable >> back house switch, but, even in a low lightning area (California--lightning every two years or so)...

    Replacement Antennas

Hi, AP is different than a repeater. Repeater does cut throughput in half. An access point sends out a primary signal--then via ethernet cable connects back to router that is connected to internet. You did not describe your setup--would powerline networking help? Or, the eternal...

    Asus RT-N53??

No Reviews, does not seem popular Not much info out there about this router--no real formal reviews I could find except this one, which is a bit suspect: http://www.tested.com/forums/rip-and-stream/43588-asus-rt-n53-review-solid-affordable-dual-band-wireless-router/ This review was cc:'d here...

    Poor Range Asus RT-N66U

5ghz or 2.4? Hi chappie, are you using the 5ghz band, or 2.4? 2.4 is going to have problems getting through two concrete bunker walls; 5ghz is not going to make it, I think. 2.4 has greater range and penetration. 5ghz: better signal in many ways, but not in terms of range and penetration...

Need router that won't need to be reset every 2 days

UPS: not expensive Actually, I second that UPS suggestion. Citation: various DD WRT/Anandtech forums and Slashdot posts over the years: http://tech.slashdot.org/story/08/07/12/2322213/why-do-we-have-to-restart-routers I'm a network admin for an ISP, and we've been recommending UPSs...

    Future proof wireless

Future proof? That is not going to happen Hi TempEC, Future proof wireless? Not going to happen unless you are in poor health and, well, how to phrase this gracefully: the future is pretty much now. I think you are stuck in this loop a bit...
