Wi-Fi channels - the ongoing debate?

Really, it is just like a thermometer. Above zero, larger numbers are warmer. Below zero, smaller digits ("less negative") are warmer.

    RT-AC68U poor 5Ghz performance

First, remember that a repeater halves the throughput because it must handle the data stream twice. And the tradeoff between 2.4G and 5G has always been range traded for bandwidth. Ignoring the repeater issue, my Samsung mobile connected to my router on 5G at -61 RSSI gets 430Mbps download...

    Channel recommendations?

Thank you, Colin. I read somewhere (lost track of where due to brain fade) that modern hardware was so good at evading that kind of interference that it didn't really matter anymore. And as I scan our neighborhood I see more and more mesh networks assigning channels anywhere in the 2.4GHz window.

    Channel recommendations?

Is the recommendation to use only channels 1, 6, or 11 on 2.4GHz to avoid adjacent-channel interference still valid? Or have modern radios and protocols made that unnecessary? Thanks!

What does the Asus+Merlin router have that other routers don't?

I guess we have been lucky. We have placed 40 or 50 ASUS routers into home networks since the RT-N66U was the "standard bearer." The only failure I know of was a worn-out "wall-wart" power supply. I still have some of the N66's in the storeroom that we replaced only because of the increasing...

Puzzled by loss of WiFi speed

Wiz, I haven't seen yet which Wi-Fi band you are connecting to. Put different SSIDs on 2.4GHz and 5GHz so you can ensure that you are using 5GHz. The speed you are reporting sounds about like 2.4.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 is now available for all supported Wifi 6 models

Reminds me of the old saying "There are none so blind as those who WILL not read."

    Is SmallNetBuilder site still active?

There a dozens of messages every day on forums dedicated to particular devices, like ASUS routers or rmerlin's wonderful replacement firmware for them. Look for a forum with your particular interest.

One device drags entire home network down

I recall some models of home pc -- was it Lenovo? -- that had a chancy network port that would crash when the BIOS was set to certain power configurations or updated. It would take down everything on that network. The long-term solution was to ignore the built-in port and buy a cheap network card.

    Best 2.4ghz coverage Asus router

In general, my usable range on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz has increased as I upgraded from N66U to AC68U to AC86U to AX86U. Since the rules have not changed, I assume the gain has been from better radio circuitry inside the router.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.7 is now available for all models

Totally agree. I get 345Mbps downloads from my Spectrum ISP, and would happily trade some of that for more range. Although my AX86 has better range than my AC86, which in turn was better than my AC68, which was better than my N66; more range is always useful here in this 120-year-old brick...

    My experience with the RT-AC86U

And I had the opposite experience. Each step up, from N66U to AC68U to AC86U to AX86U, provided faster data speeds between the router and my favorite chair diagonally opposed to and one floor down from the router. The house is 120 years old and has large rooms and very thick walls.

Huge Bufferbloat with ASUS RT-AX86U and installed the latest Merlin Firmware. 500mbps up/down connection

JWoo, thank for you using correct unit prefixes. M is Mega, m is milli.

Is 5GHz max conducted power controlled by firmware?

Of course not. But the OP did not include that in his question. If the uplink signal is too weak the traditional solution is better antennas.

Is 5GHz max conducted power controlled by firmware?

Fortunately Wi-Fi communications are usually asymmetrical. If the uplink (client-to-router) is slower than the downlink, consider that much of time the uplink of a URL can result in the download of several pages or a whole movie. Certainly there are symmetric scenarios, but I would not think...

    Broken power button

This is a bit different from the issues reported by other users. The most frequent problem is that the power button would not STAY in once pressed, apparently due to a fault in the latching mechanism. I drop of superglue fixes that -- the router can always be turned back off by unplugging it.
