    RT-AC86U Wi-Fi range

Wow. I saw a price drop on the AC86 and jumped on it. It replaces an AC68U as the gateway router in a 3 story brick house built in 1902 (think: big rooms, thick walls). The top download speed is still limited by my ISP, of course (Spectrum, paying for 200Mbps, getting 230). But the speeds...

Allowing secondary subnet access to router

Would it help to change the address mask to 255.255.0.0, or is that just too easy to work?

Asus RT-AX86U 160 Mhz channel falls back on 80 Mhz

Could you enlighten me what makes 160MHz channels attractive? A streaming movie takes less than 5MHz of download bandwidth, so even at 5GHz/80MHz settings you should be able to stream at least 10 movies at once. BTW, thank you for your correct use of the GHz and MHz abbreviations -- a clarity...

    Manually assigned IP address

AKA the "belt and suspenders" approach. That has been reliable for me, for several years.

    Wireless Asus mesh speed issues

There is poorly-connected pair in the faulty cable. If you hold the connectors up to a bright light you may be able to see which conductors are mis-connected.

    Infected devices

Given the page title "...Prevention and Blocking," and the further comment "...Successfully Protected," I would still say that AiProtection did just what is was supposed to do.

    Infected devices

I would judge that to mean that your phone viewed a Web page, probably displaying a malicious ad that tried to infect your phone but failed. Good!

Frontier claims their router is better than most (Including my AX88U)

By definition that IS a modem -- the ONT has to MODulate the outgoing electrical pulses of data onto a light beam, and DEModulate the incoming data from the light beam back into electrical.

    Antenna polariation in Asus routers

Best guess based on observations: For external antennas the strongest signal will be at right angles to the physical axis (AKA the donut pattern). For internal antennas most likely at right angles to the largest face of the box (ie, the antennas are likely installed "flat" in the box).

    Extend or replace network router?

Assign the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands different names (SSIDs), and don't teach the balky devices the new name or password. The tradeoffs are that 5GHz offers higher speeds but 2.4GHz has longer range. Use each one where its ability is most important.

    The State of the Onion

Haven't they! But I always appreciate your reports and your comments to others on this forum. It is refreshing to see such clarity of expression, with correct spelling and syntax, and even the technical units properly abbreviated. Keep up the good work on BOTH fronts!

    RT-N66U Bricked - No WIFI

If I may add to that: To provide a baseline I tested a known good supply from an AC68U, rated at 19VDC, 1.75A. I happen to have a few 8 ohm power resistors around so I tested with 8 and 16 ohm loads. No load: 19.2V, 0.0A (of course) 16 ohm load: 18.4V, 1.15A 8 ohm load: 17.8V, 2.23A (above...

WAN port speed capped in AP mode?

Thank you, OE. I did not re-make the WAN connection in the main router (connected to Spectrum), only in the AP. I still got the higher rate when connecting to the main router. My Spectrum bill always seems to be going up with new fees they discover they can add, but I did not see an increase a...

WAN port speed capped in AP mode?

Thank you, Ronald. That's how mine used to work also, so something has farkled the WAN port. That's not a problem, I still have spare LAN ports to use.

WAN port speed capped in AP mode?

Thank you Geddric. My symptoms apply only to the WAN port when used as an Access Point.

    WiFi range RT-N66U vs. RT-AC68U

Berny, my experience has been the opposite. I found increased range when I replaced my N66U with an AC68U. As suggested above you might try different channels.

WAN port speed capped in AP mode?

Odd thing happened with my AC68U Access Point today. I noticed that the highest download speed I could get was always very near 100Mbps. I checked the connectors and cables but could find nothing amiss. As a last-ditch effort I moved the feed plug from the WAN port to a LAN port and YES! the...

    Wireless direction relative to house

And in this case is supported by operational observations.

    Wireless direction relative to house

Dr. Marshall's analysis is consistent with generally accepted principles of dipole antennas (the most common OEM screw-on type). The description "omnidirectional" applies only in azimuth (perpendicular to the physical axis of the dipole) but not in elevation (other than perpendicular) -- hence...

    NAT reminder.

I concur. Anyone who thinks their connections do not pass through several IP Addresses should review the attached clip.
